Jicama?

  • Any one ever had Jicama? It sounds like a veggie I might like! I think I might buy one to try.

What do you do with it?
  • I like it but I've never had it by itself. Only in dishes.
  • ITS FANTASTIC! One of my all time faves! Cut it into cubes and eat it raw or in a sald ~~ its crunchy and juicy, kinda like the water chestnuts that are in chinese food!

But whats even BETTER, if you are a potatoe freak like me, but wont eat them: you can make hashbrowns with them! FOr rea, and they are just like potato hashbrowns, consitensy wise, taste, everything
Shred up a jicama (and if you have time, let it soak overnight) and literally cook it just like hasbrowns, with a quarter of the calories
  • I love Jicama! I usually chop it up and eat it raw, sometimes sprinkle with lemon juice and some chili powder.

I will need to try this!
  • I'll have to try the hashbrowns. I never cared for the large jicama usually found in grocery stores, at least not raw (and haven't tried it cooked). However, in our farmers' market this year one of the vendors was selling a small variety (about the size of a small apple), and they were absolutely awesome raw! Almost like an unsweet asian pear.
  • I couldn't find any at my grocery store last night. I was in a bit of a hurry... so I will have to go back and look harder/ask someone for help. I was bummed!!
  • I like it shredded with cabbage and made into slaw. Crunchy and good!
  • I love me some jicamas, ugly little suckers that they are, but get annoyed by having to peel them. Usually I get a sliver or two embedded under my finger nails by the time I'm done.

I cut them in squared-off straws, kind of like carrot sticks.

I really like how they soak up marinade and are wonderful in cold mixed salads.

Ah, jicama. You make me think of summer days, now gone.
