Cookbook question

  • I need your advice! We are putting together an online cookbook similar to the one on the site that is for the low fat recipes. On the main page of recipe titles, there is a column to show how many carbs are in each recipe, for a quick comparison...I have been loading in gross carbs for that figure, not the carb count after fiber has been deducted.

As low carb dieters, which would you prefer? What is the most common way? I would think the gross carbs is the best way, and people that deduct fiber can do that from the actual recipe (fiber is included in nutritional count). However, if the majority of low carbers do this deduction, then maybe we need to go ahead and do it!?

Here is an example of what the page will look like, but there will be a column in there for amount of carbs:

  • I would leave it just make it known that you do not deduct the fiber from the count and lst those that do maske their woown deductions. as some may not and if you still deduct the fiber and post the fiber count they may deduct the fiber again. unluss you have a colum called effective carb count. and if you did that it would make it difficult to those that have not done that yet and are just starting.
  • looks good to me!!
and, i agree with sue. as long as you tell folks what you've done, it'll be just fine.

great job, by the way. and some of those recipes look just wonderful

    thanks!!!!
  • Hey Jennifer, WOW, that is really great! Thanks for all the hard work. I agree with them too, I think it is really great! ;-)
  • I agree with everyone else. I read on the Atkins site that there are a lot of people that still don't deduct fiber, even though Dr. Atkins says you can. Personally, I don't, unless it's a low carb bar then I do, just to make myself feel better about eating something that really has no food value.
  • Eeeeeekk! Is the lowcarb cookbook accessible, or are you guys talking about the lowfat one? Holy Moly, I gotta get a move on and fill it up if you all can see it.

PS, if it is the low fat one, that one is allll Suzanne! She has 738 recipes, I only have 48. I have a few hundred more that people have sent to put on, but it takes me about 15-20 minutes (I'm speeding up) to get it in format and verify the nutritional content. If you guys have any recipes you would like to share, please feel free to mail me or put them on the recipe forum.
  • Jennifer,

These look fabulous, whether they are yours or Suzanne's! I agree with the consensus. I'd rather you leave the fiber tally out of it. I just learned that WW had to back off on their original fiber allowances because people let themselves be misled. I think the same thing happens with carbs. I'd rather do low carb and high fiber than try to let fiber make up for a high carb count. Somehow, I think my bod would figure it out!

    Thanks!
  • Jennifer,

I agree with everyone else. List the gross amount of carbs and we can deduct the fiber ourselves. Thanks for all the hard work you guys are putting in. This is a fantastic site and we appreciate all the work you put into it!
  • Jennifer,

You might also put a footnote or comment somewhere as to why low carbers deduct the fiber from gross carb counts: some of the fiber is not absorbed by the body, so it can be considered on an interesting journey through the body rather than something that ever gets into the blood and causes the insulin levels to climb... which is the actual cause of hyperinsulinemia, and the cause to all our problems and struggles with carb addictions. However, it is a bit confusing to understand, from the fiber info usually given, what part of that fiber is absorbed and used, and what part is not. Nonetheless, it is info people can search for if they are interested (and obsessive about, like me....).

    Just a suggestion.
  • Thanks for everybody's suggestions! BTW Giggles, that is a very good idea to make a footnote, thanks!
