to protein shake? or to not protein shake?

  • I need some help. Ive been counting calories and right now i get about 1300 per day and well its tough. i find myself being hungry and my current snacks dont hold me over til the next meal.

    i need something that can help curb my hunger like a protein shake/ smoothie

    i just bought one of those blender bottles but honestly i don't know what to do with it. I'm going to buy some whey powder that has 100 calories per scoop but i don't want to just mix it with milk, i want more flavor with it.

    id like to eat er drink them as a mid- morning / mid-afternoon snack so i dont want a whole lot of calories in it. like nothing more than 150 - 200 calories if it can hold me over well enough

    any suggestions on recipes? or will this idea even help with curbing my hunger?
  • I'd say no to that. Just my opinion but protein shakes are not filling at all (I work out a lot and use them). They are meant to be a supplement if you are trying to gain weight (specifically lean mass). You can give it a shot but it's not filling. 100-150 cals of a chicken breast or something like that can be much more filling.
  • I've been having terrific luck with green smoothies. There are tons of recipes online, but my favorite is one I made myself. The recipe yields about 4 mason jars so you are good for a couple of days ! It really tastes great, mostly like apples / avocado / lime!

    2 apples, peeled if you want but I don't
    4 celery sticks
    juice of 1-2 limes to taste
    handful or two of baby spinach
    a few sprigs of parsley
    2 ripe avocado's
    optional - for a more hearty smoothie, when I want to have half a tuna sandwich and a smoothie for lunches, I add about 400g of silken tofu.

    Add a bit of water, to get the consistency of your liking, and pulverize!
  • I use: 2 oz. of kefir (yogurt)
    1 sliced banana
    1 scoop whey powder
    cinnamon/cardamom/ginger/whatever I want to spice
    fill the rest with almond milk

    The total (including whey powder) probably comes to around 280 calories or so. But it's very filling--I think the yogurt helps. Sometimes I have one at 6 p.m. and I'm not hungry again all night.
  • I drink Carnation Instant Breakfast, and I find that it really does hold me over very nicely until lunch. But otherwise, I don't know much else about protein shakes...
  • shakes dont work for me ever. so it just ends up being extra cals.
    i need fiber. the most sustaining are beans/lentils. have protein and lots of fiber. plus if you get dried beans they are practically the cheapest thing in the store. lots of fruit/veg. i love hummus. i also like veggie burgers. oatmeal is one of the best breakfast type foods. for keeping us full. frozen/fresh fruit is awesome in that. like dark cherries, yum!

    since i started this journey that's how i had been all about fiber and fiber would keep me from not going overboard but it seems like its not working now. i had even tried eating sugar free oatmeal as a snack to see if that would work ...didnt work

    im going to give the green smoothie a try !
  • I have used my fair share of Protein shakes. I will say, the more you spend the better it is. I drank a lot of stuff like EAS, and it didn't work so well for holding my appetite over. (I use protein after I work out.) However, I bought a $50 tub of powder at Nutrition Zone, and it works much better and is not so "grainy". It's called Lean Pro Matrix, is made by Next Level Nutrition, and it comes in a ton of flavors. I like it much better. The Orange Dreamsicle flavor is great!
