Any PCOS chicks have a copper IUD (Paragard)?

  • Please note that I am talking about the 10-year copper (non-hormonal) Paragard IUD. The 5-year Mirena is hormonal and has completely different side effects.

I have never liked hormonal birth control. It has always made me feel depressed and even suicidal (Yasmin was particularly bad). I had the Paragard copper IUD inserted on July 28th. I bled from that point through August 4th. It stopped for barely over a week, then it started back up on Aug 13th and I have been bleeding this entire week and it's still going with no sign of letting up. I have never had kids so I thought maybe I was expelling the IUD, so I went to my gyno on Wednesday (Aug 18th) and he said it looked perfect.

Has anyone else with PCOS had one of these inserted? If so, what has been your experience? I'm starting to think that instead of interrupting the uterine environment that it actually works by making you bleed so much that you're too icky to actually have sex (unless your man is ok with "crime scene sex").
  • I had a copper iud for about a year (before we tried to have a child). I bled for about 2 weeks after insertion and every month I would have a heavy period for around 7 days. I also cramped a little worse than usual every month. I am not trying to discourage you at all...these were a downside but it was nice to not have to deal with taking a pill everyday. This was before I knew I had pcos b/c I had been on the pill for 10 years and this "masked" my symptoms somewhat. The only reason I got it was b/c I thought the pill was what was making me gain weight...little did I know.

That was about 7 years ago but I hope that helps. BTW, removal made me cramp pretty bad and I bled for about a week but my doc said this was normal in women that had not had kids yet.
