Okay this is weird and painful

  • Don't know if this has ever happened to anybody but i tried doing pushups tonight and as soon as i put pressure on my hand this pain shot through my palm and thumb that was crazy! I could do no more than one pushup it was so painful. It wasn't holding up my weight at all that caused the pain my arms are pretty strong and i can hold the plank pose for a fairly good amount of time. It almost felt like if I had carpel tunnel or something. AnOne here with carpel tunnel? Can you please decribe what that pain is like? I really wanto do pushups and tione my arms sorry for typos I'm typing on my phone
  • i had mild carpel tunnel in my right hand...and my hand was just numb and sore all the time. Nothing like you've described and you would normally be able to make a connection between the repetitive movement and the pain.

It could be a mild sprain from something else? Baby it for a couple days, try something else for toning. If it does go away, see a doctor.
  • actually that is a sign of the median nerve being irritated. You can also elicit the a numb sensation response by taking 2 fingers and tapping on the nerve area--if your hand gets numb, then it is positive.

just because it is not severe does not mean it is not irritated. Be very careful. You might want to do modified push ups, and/or higher push ups by leaning on a surface and doing them.
  • When I was in college and had to take 2 semesters of P.E., I took an independent study (so I wouldn't have to be in a class), and I had to work with a faculty advisor (the women's swim coach) to develop my program (I chose weight lifting, swimming, and bicycling), she warned me against doing pushups, saying they weren't safe for anyone of my size because of the pressure they put on the bones, nerves, and tendons of the hands and feet (men's style) or knees (women's style).

I was under 300 lbs at the time (not a lot under, but under) and very active (the coach was impressed that her thin sister at a neighboring college couldn't keep up with my swim routine).

Before taking on something like pushups, maybe it would help to talk to a personal trainer (at the YMCA), a physiatrist or sports medicine doctor, or at least your general practitioner.
  • @ducky and jen it's not numb at all and i tried tapping that area with 2 fingers today and its def. Not numb its sore almost like a bruise but no bruise is there.
as far as the weight i was wondering about that too. i dont feel pain at all from heaviness though cause i can hold the plank and yoga poses with no problem maybe i should check into it with a doctor

Bearing in mind that this is advice I received 20 years ago, when I got the advice in college from the women's swim coach (by the way, at Illinois Wesleyan, all the faculty had to have doctorates, so she had adoctorate in P.E. or a related field. I think hers was in exercise physiology) - it wasn't about the weight involved.

I distinctly remembered that, because the coach told me it wasn't the weight itself - because she talked about that. She said that pushups were like bench pressing several times your body weight (I don't remember how much), but that it was safer to bench press the equivalent weight for a variety of reasons (and I don't remember them, because it was so long ago).

I just remember her saying she'd rather I use the weight machines than push ups.
  • @kaplods that does make a whole lot of sense i think i understand now

@brown tht is the exact feeling it's like the meat of my palm is sensitive to the touch when i do a pushiIt/s like the palm near the thumb is sore to the toush but it doesn't go away until i stop putting pressure on it. I think i may stick to wall pushups until i get to a lighter weight.
  • @kaplods that makes alot of sense i guess I'll stick to wall pushups until I'm a little lighter.

@brown yes! That is exactly what it feels like
  • Sounds like trapped nerves to me, I say that because it goes away when you flex your hand so your probably releasing the nerve I would say if it starts to happen regularly see a doctor , always better safe then sorry
