Period talk...

  • So my period has never been consistent. My PCOS has made sure of that as well as my family history. My mother never had a consistent TOM either. Well, my gyno put me back on birth control to regulate everything so I just got my first period since I don't know when...definitely over a year ago. My weekly weighins are on Thursdays and this last weighin I was up two pounds-which I can only assume are from my period considering how much work I put in to my diet and exercise.

Anyway, my question is does this weight come back off and if I continue my diet and exercise throughout my period will I be down additional poundage.

This is a little embarressing for me because I feel like I should know this but again...I've never had a consistent period whilst dieting.
  • It's highly likely, I would say. I go up a couple pounds during my TOM because it's not bad enough that I break out and get terrible cramps, I have to get bloated, too! haha But it always comes right off and sometimes takes a little extra weight with it!

So my guess is you're just retaining water and it's nothing to fret about.
  • Hi ShellydeFlores... I too have PCOS and very infrequent periods. Just after starting my weight loss in May, I have had 2 spontaneous periods (but the birth control is definitely the way to go for giving your ovaries a rest).

My weight always goes up a little when my period is coming or arrived despite my best exercise/diet efforts, and then I have a weight-loss whoosh. The weight should go down and then some...
  • Sounds about right. I've never had a very regular TOM, until I started birth control a few years ago. It really helped regulate me - but I always retain a crazy amount of water during my period. I just push on through the cramps and bloating, irritated that my gym-wear is a bit more snug than usual... and in a few days all is back to normal.
  • That sounds about right! I have PCOS as well, and as I lost more weight, my periods started coming back pretty regularly. I'm glad it is stabilizing but...I hate TOM!
  • Quote: I'm glad it is stabilizing but...I hate TOM!
I think most of us are on the same page!
  • Same here as the others. I don't have PCOS, but I get the same thing..couple pounds up just before and for the first day or two, and then a Whoosh and usually a little extra off at the end.
  • Absolutely positively hate my period. Junk Food is the Devil, and my Period is its child. I get bad cramps the first day and days 1,2, and 3 are VERY heavy!! I feel so disgusting; I have to put a fresh pad on practically every half hour.
  • hey shelly!
i would say absolutly it will come off! if you wanna help it along faster drink half your weight in ounces of water everyday your on the rag with a little squeeze of lemon. just last week i was on my rag and i always tend to gain four pounds worth of bloating and always have usually after the second day i get off the rag the weights gone so dont let that get you done its all about how your body handles it. hope this helps
  • Thanks ladies. This has been quite helpful and I'm glad to know that it will come off. Unfortunately I have quite a bit of shedding to do so I have been on my period since last Sunday. I guesstimate that I will still be on my period in a week.

CMR-I agree. The period is the devils child definitely in the junk food arena. I have been craving things that I haven't even thought about since being serious about dieting. I've given in to a couple of the cravings just to find out I didn't really enjoy them that much.

I froze some grapes to satisfy my cravings for ice cream or popsicles. It's working great!

    Thanks again, ladies!
