Has anyone expericed long periods?

  • I haven't had my period for 5 months. About a month ago I started exercising and then on 22nd June I got my period. And my period is still here. It was heavy at first then around the 10th is stopped then the next day it started again but it's been like spotting to light flow but now it's starting to get heavier.

I plan on going to the doctor but I'm kinda of freaking out now because I'm worried it might be something serious. In the recent months I have gained weight so I'm thinking maybe the excess weight might have something my period going crazy.

I'm just wondering if anyone else with PCOS has experienced this.
  • When off BCP, I'm more the other end of the spectrum where it comes fast and fierce when it comes at all.

Hope doc can give you some insight though.

    hugs,
    A.
  • Its because your lining still builds up during those 5 months so you have a lot to shed. Its basically like missing 5 periods and then having them all at once. Its normal when you don't have one for awhile. I once had one that 20 days! It really stinks, I hope it quits for you soon!!!
  • I use to have long periods like yours ALL the time before I went on any medication. Right now I'm on Seasonal and I only have my periods every 3 months, but I'm happy to report that when it does come time for me to have my period, it only lasts for a week!

This is exactly what happens - My Dr said you are basically hemoraging the lining. I am not on meds, and trying to get my weight under control to help with TOM. I will skip having a cycle for 6-8 months, and then I will bleed for 6-8 weeks.

The positive is that my body seems to be getting it since I am losing - I started a cycle and it only lasted 10 days - which for me is awesome!
  • My doctor told me when you miss periods it is normal to have a backlog and an extended period when you do finally have one. If you start having a lot of 'tissue' loss or replacing products several times an hour, it's important to speak with your doctor. Since these are rich in blood, it can quickly add up to significant losses.

Last fall I had a period that lasted for 6 weeks that was very heavy and as a result I ultimately needed two blood transfusion because my hemoglobin had dropped below 7.0 and then below 5.5. At the time, I was on Metformin for the PCOS as well as Coumadin for a clot in my calf. The blood thinners certainly did not help the situation.
