  • Today is Day 7 for me on calorie counting, and I did nothing different as far as eating wise yesterday, but I did work out a little longer than usual. And no it is not my period because I don't have those anymore. I was wondering if maybe its something I am eating? What are things that you eat/drink that make you bloat??
  • One word....SALT! .... What was your sodium intake yesterday?
  • i'm calorie counting as well. And I pretty well avoid all carbs not vegetable in form. I'm bloaty, and the scale went up a tad. Also not so regular now. Not comfortable.
  • Bread. Shame, because I love it! Now a no-no.
  • Simple carbs make you bloated, too much sodium, too many carbs, and adding too much fiber to fast. Pineapple, broccoli, and tuna can help you "beat the bloat."
  • 3 possibilities come to mind:
    1. It's probably salt like rritchey said. Many years ago I thought eating 'diet' frozen meals and low calorie canned soup was good...now I try not to eat anything prepackaged or canned if I can help it (and I definately don't add salt to food anymore). I also used to love pickles (the big movie theater kind) but thats a big no-no as well for me.
    2. Also, it seems fairly common for women to not be regular. If you are constipated it could definately make you bloated. I don't care for yogurt so I take accidophilus that comes in a chewable tablet and it seems to help with regularity.
    3. If you just started eating a lot of veggies some of them can cause gas which can make you feel bloated.
  • Always carbs for me.
  • I have a terribly bloated reaction to certain kinds of artificial sweeteners. They make me feel horrible and make my stomach look six months pregnant.

For some people, eating lots of fruits and veggies can also have that effect, at least that's what my doc told me when I complained... (I'm sooo glad it's the artificial sweetener!)
  • ummm.. ANYTHING SUGAR FREE...made with sugar alcohol-- malitol, sorbitol, xylitol. Sugar free GUM! Sugar Free Syrup, Sugar free candy, you get the drift. It is ALWFUL... i went 8 months looking like i was 5 months pregnant because i was chewing so much sugar free gum, and i had no idea what was causing the awful lower abdominal bloat. I seriously had more than one person ask me when i was due! it was that bad. Soon as i cut out SF products (chew full-sugar gum now) my stomach became flat as a board (MOST days!) I guess it has to do with the fcact that Sugar Alcohol cant be digested, so it sits and ferments in the intestines, causing SEVERE bloating, in my case~!
  • salt, and refined carbs version (as opposed to whole grain version) of bread pasta etc. i'm doing approx 1200 calories a day, and getting carbs from veggies instead of other sources, and avoiding sodium. to help with bloating, walking, water, asparagus, and parsley help me. hope you feel better soon!
  • Update -
I felt awful all day because I was bloated all day. So I went to the store bought diurex, and walked a mile and ran for 3 minutes (trying to get to 45 minutes eventually) now I feel 10x better!! By the way, I have came to the conclusion that it is my sodium level because I consume about 2300 mg? a day. I will be watching that more closely.
  • I did not know salt would do that. I will start watching my salt level. Did not know on the sugar free either. Thanks!
  • Sooo interesting about the sugar free foods. I'm on medication for my stomach because it's bloated and painful all of the time. The doctor has me on a six month trial of medicine for acid reflux, but I've been on the gallbladder bandwagon (I do have a crazy family background of people having their GBs out at very, very young ages (15 even)). But I've definitely had an increase of SF stuff. Time to cut that out, too.
  • Pasta, likely because I SMOTHER it in romano cheese, which is likely a SALTY GOODNESS DISASTER!!! I love it so much, I eat it too fast and much too much, and have terrible bloating and gas after. I try not to eat pasta anymore.
  • My period is due in 3 days so I know why I'm feeling bloated now, but when I first started eating more veggies, I noticed some gave me gas and blaoting and I had to cut down. I agree that hidden sodium is also a likely culprit. For me, drinking lots of water helps keep the bloat at bay.
