Vent: Argh... sodium!

  • I don't salt any of my food and I try to be aware of it when it is "hidden."

    But I'm feeling annoyed that I can't get my sodium down!

    It's suggested adults eat less than 2400. Guess what? I'm at 3600.

    I know I could do better with eating out on the weekend. Or just not eat out.

    Just cranky that this is an area I want to work on and I'm not getting a grip on it yet. Sigh.

    You can NEVER escape the hidden Evil Sodium and Water Weight Gain!

    NEVER!

    It will find you, no matter what you eat, and it will bloat your belly & swell your ankles & make your rings tight & pull up a number on that scale that will make you suicidal for hours after your unlucky weigh in.

    And you'll rack your brain wondering what it was that you ate or drank that did this. What? What?
  • It can definitely drive you nuts! I have to stay at 1200 mg or below for my blood pressure so I sympathize with how tough it can be; especially when eating out.

    I'm going to try to keep it sane over the weekend if we dine out again and I planned out tomorrow's log to come in at 2000 if I stick with it.

    So... onward!

  • I hear you on the salt issue. I haven't been able to keep my intake lower than 3000 in three months. That's awful! I have never salted my food before and I try to get the lower salt varieties of foods, but many of my healthy on-the-go meals have a lot of salt. Annoying!
  • Hello my name is Terre and I am a Saltaholic! I salt everything...and I mean everything. Before I started eating better we would go to McDonalds and I would salt the fries and the ketchup. Then open my big mac and salt the meat. I salted and salted...i still salt but not as much I am working on that. Salt to me is truely like a beer is to a alcoholic, I crave it, I want it, I LOVE it!!

    Yes, I swell up like a balloon... Today I am so swollen I cant move my rings and my eyes are barely open..why do I do this. I know what will happen and I do it anyways.
  • I've found that since I've started eating more veggies and less "boxed" and already-prepared food, that my sodium has come down on its own. I eat a lot of bacon and sausage, but even with that, over the past week my sodium is at at average of 76% of the RDA of 2160 mg/day. Granted, some days it's high, and some days it's low. That's why I like to look at the average... my cottage cheese and pecan breakfasts four days a week kinda offset the bacon and eggs breakfasts three days a week! (and interestingly, the cottage cheese/pecan breakfast is higher in sodium than the bacon breakfast!)

    I also know that specific items are much higher in sodium than I expected -- salsa, the stir fry sauce I buy, for example. And things that I think are high sodium are easy to fit in, in smaller amounts (like the aforementioned bacon).

    It's really the restaurant food and the frozen-prepared meals that kill my sodium goals. So I try to avoid it.
  • Good News: Today's sodium was a more respectable 2606! Go me!

    Bad News: My snacking on salt free nuts? Put that on my trigger list. I can't seem to keep those portions controlled and nuts rack up the calories big time.

    Off to workout and think about tomorrow's food plan.
