highlights?! ACK!

  • I have long (past my shoulders) dark brown hair and want to get some highlights. I've never been to a professional for highlights before, I've only done them from a box a t home. They always turned out okay, but not exactly what I wanted.

I'm using a haircut and highlights from a professional place as my reward for being on plan for 7 days. I went to google and tried to find some pictures of the kinds of highlights I wanted. I wasn't able to find anything, and by anything I mean anything useful. It was all websites trying to sell crap and pictures of the 'punk rock' hair styles.

I want those cute multi colored highlights that I see on other women. I think they are gorgeous. They cover the entire head and are like 3 different colors. Are these even called highlights? They are like 3 different colors streaked in the hair in little strands and they compliment the original color of the hair. Am I making any sense at all? I'm just trying to get a better Idea of what i want and what would look good on me so I can accurately describe it to the lady that will be doing my hair, lol.

    Any ideas?
  • you are looking for highlights, lowlights, and midtones. Be prepared to pay alot when you for for this. Upwards of $100. Hope this helps if your avatar is you I highly suggest going for strawberry blond highlights and some rich auburn lowlights with some golden honey midtones. Talk to a good stylist and they should be able to guide you in the right direction.

This may vary from place to place. In my salon, they are simply called highlights. I have dark blond hair (see my avatar) and I usually 2-coloured highlights - one lighter and one a bit reddish. I have a good hairstylist that I like and I just leave it up to her. It takes the decision-making out of my hands.
I think I pay somewhere around $100 but that includes a haircut (which, on its own, runs me down, after taxes, about $37).
I agree that you need to discuss it with your stylist. I really highlights (lowlights, midlights, whatever the whole sheband is called) would be really nice on you.
Hey, I think you should have your hair done on the same day as the Brazilian. Kinda a whole body package, you know?
Your DH will think a Hollywood movie star landed in his bedroom.
  • Aiesline, it sounds like you know what you're talking about! Yes that is me in my avatar and your advice on color sounds like something I would like. Thanks for the heads up on price. I was thinking it would be around that area of expense.

Tomato, my hubby would reallly like that!
  • Wow, I was just thinking about these very questions the other day! I've got long brown hair too and would seriously love to treat myself with those kinds of highlights when I get down to a certain weight. I did do some maybe ten years ago but it's been so long . . . anyway, I know what to look for and ask about when the time comes.
