  • Hello!
For quite a while now I've been noticing that my skin is extremely dry. I mean, all over. So dry that the skin on my fingers and feet look kinda white. I do try to exfoliate to get it to go away, but nothing helps. I'm also constantly putting on all kinds of lotion. Could this be weight loss related? I've lost about 65 pounds in the past year. What kinds of lotions would everyone out there recommend for extremely dry skin (it's dry all over my body ). I thought it would just be a winter thing, but it's still dry even now that it's a bit warmer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • I also have really dry skin. I use Eucerin and it works wonders!
  • when I lived up North, during the winter my skin would get so dry it would be painful. I started using the Olay Quench body wash, in shower lotion, and regular lotion and it worked very well.

Other than that, I always use thick creams, like Body Butter from The Body Shop instead of lotions, they work much better.
  • i second the eucerine. works best when applied after taking a shower. i have no idea about if there's a connection btwn weight loss and changes of skin.
  • I like Cetaphil lotion.
I'm not currently using it cause I have some Lubriderm body lotion I need to use up. My skin is very dry as well.
  • My daughter has sensitive skin. Her doc said to use Dove soap and put Cetaphil or Eucerin on her.

    A.
  • I recommend using Dove as a face wash and Vaseline's Cocoa Butter. It's one of the few creams that really seem to hold in moisture. An extra bonus is that it's very cheap to buy, and should be easily purchased from different countries. I have dry skin too.
  • Occasionally showering and shaving legs with hair conditioner instead of soap, works for me.
  • My dermatologist recommended Aveeno Advanced Care, found in the first aid aisle and it's been pretty miraculous. I have skin conditions, some of which have worsened since I've been losing weight but no one has mentioned that might be a cause. Although, I know stress causes flare ups and losing weight is a stress, albeit a good stress when I'm accomplishing it.
  • Vaseline. I even use it on my face as a night time moisturizer, but it's not for everyone, luckily it doesn't clog my pores or make me oily.

It's pure, no other ingredients, it's the base for all other creams but it's actually super effective because it traps all the moisture in after you shower. And it's dirt cheap.
  • Addressing possible root causes - when I first started losing weight and was attempting the classical low-fat diet, my skin literally started to flake off in sheets ... along with shattering fingernails, breaking hair, and generalized grumpiness. When I started adding the good fats back in, plus taking EPA/DHA supplements, all of that went away.

I know it can be harder to get warm once weight comes off, and it's meant standing in hot showers longer than before - if that's the case, then Eucerin is terrific, and for really bad spots, organic coconut oil.

    Good luck!
  • I never had a problem w/dry skin when I lived in PA, but now that I'm in Colorado and the air is much dryer and thinner it seems like dry skin is a constant problem. I use Aveda's Replenishing Body Moisturizer. I love it because it's not greasy and 20 seconds after you put it on your skin just feels super soft. It never feels like I just coated myself in moisturizer.
  • Saw your post, there is a wonderful natural goat milk soap, the company is alabu and they are on the web. good luck
  • My son has extremely dry skin. He has tried both Cetaphil and Eucerin. They weren't really much help. What has worked wonders (and I recommend it to everyone) is Cerave. It comes in a body wash, lotion and a cream (for really dry skin). I use it also. Within two or three days of using it, my son's dry skin was pretty much gone.

ETA: The Cerave is what both his dermatologist and allergist recommended.
  • My mom has struggled with dry skin all her life. I introduced her to Lush, which is a company that makes all sorts of bath products and this sales lady convinced her to try what they call "body butter". She bought it, not thinking it would work and then when she used it, she was so surprised that it worked! The one she uses is called "King of Skin." It's pricey stuff, but it works. Check them out if they have a store in your area.
