Confused about salad dressing and mayonaise

  • What type of mayonaise is allowed- the regular or the low fat?

And salad dressings- the regular or the reduced fat?
  • From the Phase 1 food list:
    Mayonnaise - Regular - 1 TBS
Mayonnaise - Low Fat - 2 TBS (avoid varieties made with high fructose corn syrup)
Salad Dressing - 2 TBS. Use those that contain 3 grams of sugar or less per 2 TBS. Best choices contain canola or olive oil. Low carb salad dressings may also be used if they meet these guidelines.
  • Thank you. So I should aim to use low fat mayo then.

So about the salad dressing, does most everyone use the regular? That seems like a lot of calories.
  • I bought some sugar free dressing and the SF Ranch is gross, however the SF Thousand Island is pretty good. To decrease the nasty taste of the Ranch I added 1 splenda packet and it made it better, but still not great. Guess I am to used to the full body taste.
  • There are several varieties of Newman's low fat dressings I use. I also make my own with seasoned vinegar and EVOO
  • I believe that Hellman's olive oil and canola oil mayo's are South Beach compliant. The canola has 45 calories per tbls and the olive oil 50 calories instead of the usual 100 calories per tablespoon in regular mayos (and I think the olive oil is called "mayonaisse dressing with olive oil because it doesn't technically qualify as a true mayo).

I don't think either are made with HFCS. Sugar is listed in the ingredients, but there's less than 1g in a tablespoon (meaning less than 4 calories are coming from sugar in each tablespoon of mayo/dressing).

I'm very picky about mayo. I like Hellman's original mayo (and a few generic brands that I think are actually Hellman's in disguise Best Foods I know is actually Hellman's, and I think Kroger's store brand is also actually Hellman's, and the Aldi regular mayo is ok, and close to Hellman's, but not quite).

I absolutely HATE, HATE, HATE most light mayonaises. The only exceptions are the Hellman's canola cholesterol free mayo (45 calories) and the Hellman's mayonaise dressing with extra virgin olive oil (50 calories).

I prefer the canola, but the olive oil one is pretty good too. They're the only under 60 calorie/tbs mayo-style spreads I like even a little bit. They don't (to me) have any of that weird aftertaste that I associate with light mayo dressings.
  • My two favorite dressings are Newman's own Balsamic Vinagrette and Olive oil and vinegar. They are SO good!
