Exercising with my knee :( Suggestions would be appreciated

  • I have dislocated my knee, can I be advised on some exercises that I can do without re-dislocating it while it heals. I have been doing sit-ups as my workouts so far, but would like some variation.

On the other hand if you have any dietary advice for this period of light exercises, it would be appreciated too.
  • Are you having physio or anything? You should ask there. I dont know about dislocated knees, but I know after knee surgery people are often advised to cycle, lightly at first. You could do some upper strength work too. I would just ask my dr/physio and do exercises gently to see what strains/hurts it and what doesnt, and stick to what doesnt for a while. You might also be able to swim
  • i always thought the elliptical machine was knee friendly but i would ask a physical therapist or doc first
  • I have patella laxity in which my kneecap dislocates. Underwent physical therapy for 6 weeks and was recommended to wear a knee brace while exercising to prevent mvoement, exercise my quads daily because it decreases the laxity, and DO NOT do high impact activities such as running on a treadmill. The elliptical is fine, but when I first got injured and was doing physical therapy, I was told to stay away from even that until it healed and was no longer painful. So I guess the best exercises for me involved low-impact strength training of my quads, but I did it in physical therapy.
  • I am lucky, I am getting physio now for a knee propblem occuring because of muscles tugging the knee cap the wrong way. It might be worth paying for one physio therapy session and get the most out of it.

You could do punching work, swimming for aerobic exercises.

There are a great many dumbell exercises that can be done without involving your legs too much. Dumbells can be bought for pretty cheap too
  • I would recommend stationary bike. I dislocated my knee in 07 and had surgery for a torn meniscus back in july and both times about a week after I was allowed to start riding a bike. but start slowly. I wouldn't recommend elliptical until you feel stronger and comfortable and it feels stable and definitely don't do anything on a treadmill for a while. I just started jogging about a month ago.
