Bloodwork

  • I don't know if our measurments for cholesterol and sugars are similar between Canada and the US, but I got the results back from my bloodwork today and was somewhat surprised by the results.

I have lost 39lbs so far after following Atkins for 9 or 10 weeks. I knew my sugars would go down, but I assumed my cholesterol would decrease as well due to the weightloss.

Here are my before (1 year ago) and after (1 week ago) results so you can pick it apart:

Sugars went from 6 down to 5.1

Total cholesterol went from 4.3 up to 6.02

HDL went from 0.8 up to 6.91

LDL went from 3 up to 4.24

Triglycerides went from 1 up to 2.01

and, my hemogolobin A1C is less than 6 (normal)

Obviously my sugars going down is good. My HDL going up is good, but it went up too much. It is a little concerning to me seeing my LDL and Triglycerides go up that much.

    Any thoughts/suggestions?

    Thanks!
  • I found this site that shows the comparisons between our two countries: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cho...levels/CL00001
My total is borderline high, my LDL is high, my HDL is "best" and my triglycerides are borderline high.
  • Do you know your actual number's?
    Total Cholesterol
    HDL
    LDL
    Triglycerides
  • If my calculations are correct:
    TOTAL-240
    HDL-276
    LDL-169
    TRI-80
  • Quote: If my calculations are correct:

Something's not quite right. Your HDL can't be higher than your total. It's not a conversion problem, because even with your original figures, HDL is higher than the total.

I'm pretty sure the problem is your HDL. I don't think it's possible to be that high. The highest I've ever heard of is something like 120, and that's pretty high.
  • Those are the numbers given to over the phone...when I get a chance in the next week or so I'll stop by the office and request a photocopy to confirm...
