Accentuate the Positive!

  • Well, after another Monday weigh in of NADA lost. I decided to refocus my attention. It's clear to me that I am doing the necessary things to loose weight, but that I may need to focus on things like measurements to get me through my sticky scale issue. I stay in my calorie range of 1200 - 1400 and workout an hour 5 days a week (my heart rate monitor says I burn 400-500 calories each time).

That being said, in the last month, I have lost a whopping 2lbs and actually have hovered between 186.8 and 188. Boo.

Anyhow, I decided to start this thread so that we can talk about the "other" changes we see. Or Non-Scale Victories (NSV's)

I see a big difference in my arms. I used to wave hello, and my triceps would wave for me again. Now, when I do my hair in the morning, I can see a "cut" in my bicep!!

I also see a difference in my tummy. After 4 kids (and the last 2 back to back!) my tummy and hips have a lot of my weight. I have resurrected a couple of pairs of pants that now fit around the waist. Hooray!!

So...what do you see in yourself that's different??
  • MP: What a great idea for a thread! I've been losing, but my body image hasn't quite caught up to my body size yet.

    My NSVs:
    - I am perfectly content with a 1/2 serving size of chips (usually 35-50g is 1 serving; I'm eating 20-25g)

    - I'm running for 40 minutes- That's the longest I've ever been able to run before; usually it was 5-6 minutes tops (about a year ago) and before that (in high school), it was less than 1/8 mile.

    - I look good in skinny jeans!! EPIC WIN!!!

    - I'm about to buy a size 14 in jeans and pants since my 16s are big.

    - I need to have my wedding ring resized; it's so loose I'm afraid it'll fall off in another 8-10 pounds.
  • Awesome idea! My losses have been slower of late as well. I think I only lost 3 pounds in March. Focusing on NSV's is a great idea.

    NSV's:

I can pass my Air Force Fitness test!

I can now fit in size 12 again.

People have begun to notice the change.

My husband decided to join me in the weight loss journey (BIG WIN!!!!).

Having pictures taken doesn't terrify me.

Bathing suit weather is only bringing slight twinges of panic (much better than last year!).
  • Mollz I'm with you - still look in the mirror and feel like not much has changed, but I know from all the positive feedback people have given me that it's a big difference!

My big achievement is being able to run six miles in sixty minutes, something I wouldn't have dreamed of five months ago.

Morton I envy your arms! Mine could pass for the Pillsbury dough boy arms!
  • Silverstar - wtg on the time, girl!! I was happy that I made it 3.3 miles in a hour last week! A 10min mile is FANTASTIC!

Awesome time! You should definitely be proud of that!

I can run (relatively) fast, but not if going far. I can run 1.5 miles in 14 minutes (about 9&1/2 min/mile); but if I run over 30 minutes, I have to slow to about 11 min/mile.
  • Thanks ladies! I do have to say, it ain't pretty! I'm huffing and puffing for the last two miles and sweating like a mad woman!
  • A 10 minute mile is a great goal! Be proud of your accomplishment! My short little legs can barely handle 6mph, so I'm content right now with 5.3.

Just got back from the gym and my run; a 40-minute run with no ipod. It died during my warmup. Hard going, but I did it. I'm sure the guy on the bike next to me thought I was nuts doing cadences the last 15 minutes I was there.

That's dedication! Exercise w/o tunes just sucks!!!!

I haven't sung Jodies (cadences) since boot camp...it must have been a great sight ...not sure I'd have the nerve...WTG!!!!
