BP Medicine Slow Weight Loss

  • Can blood pressure medicine slow weight loss. I take 25mg Toprol daily and my weight loss seems really slow. Anybody take blood pressure medicine and experience slower weight loss? Would the time of day you take it have any effect on weight loss also?
  • Yep! I don't think the time you take it has an effect because it's supposed to stay in your system equally for 24 hours. Three different doctors told me it would affect my weight loss, one of which told me not to bother thinking about weight loss. But of course that was crazy talk, lol. I take beta blockers for blood pressure but also to help regulate an arrhythmia.

Successful weight loss is very possible on medications that affect weight, it just takes a little more work, such as longer periods of exercise and really counting those calories.

I should add that I don't know if this is true for all BP medicines, so there may be plenty out there that work very well without affecting your weight.

Regular exercise, particularly walking, has been shown to lower BP and you might even be able to get off the meds after a while.
  • Actually, my BP medicine kick started my weightloss. I lost something insane like 5 lbs in the first 2 days and 8 lbs in the first week. I take what is essentially a diuretic for my BP, though, so that's why. I was retaining ridiculous amounts of water, so that's what the weightloss came from (also? went down a shoe size and a half that week. My feet looked like 3rd trimester pregnant lady feet before I started taking it!)
