Losing motivation! Help!

  • Ugh... This ALWAYS happens every time I try to lose weight.

I've been going pretty good (exercise-wise at least) for nearly two weeks now, and have built up a little more stamina and can handle a 40 min workout session instead of 20. That's good and all, but I'm starting to lose motivation. I'm not sure why, but I do know that this always happens, and is the reason I've never lost more than 25 lbs when trying to exercise.

I just want instant gratification. I just want to look fit now, but instead I keep seeing the same, fat girl in the mirror... and I hate it! It's so frustrating.

Also, I've been skimping a little on the exercise. I can handle my usual 40 mins, but I just stop even though I could go on... I just stop, because I get bored or something, and then I feel like I cheated myself later. And I've been feeling moody and depressed, been picking fights with my husband.

I just feel fat and disgusting. I don't know what happened to the optimism I had days ago, but my mood is weird like that sometimes. I've even had a loss of creativity.
  • I think you're bored because you don't really enjoy your exercise of choice at the moment. Try something new, hiking (get the hubby out with you), walking/jogging outside (spring is here, or almost, get out there and enjoy the fresh air), try weight training, get a personal trainer if you can afford it. Read up on exercises, the internet is exploding with different ideas and fun things to do... Read books/magazines get them free at the library...

But, most importantly, find something you love to do then do it !!

Hope this helps, keep us posted on your progress...
  • Fake it til you can make it.

Most people manage to go to school, work, etc. even on the days they aren't thrilled about it.

I find it is the same with exercise. Do what you can about trying to pick things you like, and know that even then... there will be the ups and downs and the days where you just have to fake the enthusiasm and JUST DO IT. "Yay! It is workout time!"

Eventually the "ooomph" will come back and you will "just make" the enthusiasm and really mean it when "Yay! It is workout time!" comes.

    GL!

  • Thanks for your suggestions. I can't afford a gym membership, nor do I drive (sad, I know), so I use DVDs and have some 10 lb weights, and a Wii. I didn't warm-up properly last time I played "Just Dance" so my leg is aching a little bit, but despite that, I tried to do some exercise anyway. Think I was just having a down day.
