  • This isn't my first time on Atkins. The first time, I lost 20 pounds the first month. I am eating within the induction guidelines, 20 carbs a day. I am confortable that I am following the diet correctly. So what gives?

Here's what I am wondering. I have one Atkins bar a day for a snack. I also have 1 low carb yogurt a day. Could this be the problem? Should I stay away from processed foods and stick with meat, eggs, cheese and veggies only?

I know this can work, but I'm ready to give up and try something else. Honestly, Im very angry right now that I have done so well and had no results.

    Typical Men Day
Breakfast - 3 eggs, 4 pieces of bacon, one slice of cheese (yeah, its always the same, but I love it)

Lunch 3 cups of spring mix with either - Grilled chicken, chicken salad (0 carbs), sliced turkey or ground beef, 1/4 cup shreaded cheese, bacon bits, blue cheese dressing (0carbs) or itallian dressing (1carb)

Snack - Dannon low carb yogurt or atkins bar

Dinner - steak, pork chops, corned beef or chicken (no dressings other than seasoning blends) broccoli or mashed coliflower, sometimes grilled squash with butter. Sugar Free Jello cup.

I drink only water. No soda or coffee. Rarely a herbal tea.

I stay under 20 carbs,. So what gives?
  • Sometimes when I have too many foods with artificial sweetners in them I don't lose as much as I do when I limit those foods. I love sweets so I really have to limit what snack I eat with the sweetners in them. Hope this helps. I also have found out that if I do overindulge in those snacks my face breaks out.
  • I didnt think bars or yogurt where allowed on induction
  • According to the New Atkins website, they are. I'm beginning to believe Atkins is about selling bars and shakes now, and not helping people lose weight.
  • im fairly new to this myself - most people suggest reading 2002 edition or earlier

I would try for a cleaner approach to your eating plan. All whole foods..cut back on the processed stuff such as the bars.

That website is NOT what the good Doctor would want you following as "Atkins". It is a site to sell product and make money.

If you want information on the Atkins plan online. I suggest going to Dr. Atkins' wife's site at http://www.veronicaatkinsfoundation.org/

    Hope this helps!
  • I'm new at this too, but I have heard more senior members saying that they've experienced stalls with the bars and shakes and anything that tastes really sweet. I read once that insulin is released by the body in some people even with artificial sweeteners, so maybe that accounts for the stalls?

I know you must be frustrated with the slow rate of weight loss so far, but I'm sure you'll make more progress soon, and that you will reach your goal!

    Hello Seashell,
You most likely won't like my advice but....I'm going to give it anyway and you can do with it what you will
Looking over your menu, I see several culprits.
#1 Atkins bars. These are a definite no-no on Atkins Induction...despite what the label & the Atkins website says. They contain milk, soy & peanuts....none of those things are on the Atkins acceptable foods list. Have you turned them over and looked at the label and tried to figure out how exactly Atkins Nutritionals Inc. calculates the 2 or 3 net carb count They claim not to contain sugar alcohols...they do however contain Glycerine (which is catagorized as a sugar alcohol) and Atkins Nutritionals Inc. feels it is acceptable to deduct this from the total carb count. You may want to read this to understand their mathmatics: http://www.phlaunt.com/lowcarb/19059967.php
#2 Yogurt. Yogurt is not permitted on Atkins Induction, it is added back to your diet during OWL (the 2nd phase of Atkins) in compliance with the carb ladder (rung 2).
#3 Veggies & Salads. In your 20 net carbs for the day, 12-15 of those carbs should be coming from veggies & salads on the acceptable foods list.
#4 Fats. Atkins is an adequate protein, high fat eating plan. You need to consume adequate fat on this plan since the purpose of Atkins is to convert the fat you are eating in place of carbs to keep your body fueled.
#5 Cheese. Keep cheese to a 3-4 oz. maxiumum. Eat only the cheese's listed on the acceptable foods list.
Last but not least, artificial sweeteners. You may or may not be sensitive to them. You may want to re-consider the sugar free jello cup particularly if it contains aspartame.

Sadly, you are correct. Since Dr. Atkins death in 2003 and Atkins Nutritionals Inc. taking over, lets just say, they have not adhered to his eating plan the way he wrote it. The website is all about the shakes & bars and advertising them as being "appropriate for Induction". Keep in mind, Atkins Nutritionals Inc. is a business and the goal of a business is profit. If you must refer to a website for advice, please check out the site Torister suggested.
It is obvious if you are following what has been suggested on the Atkins website for 1 month and you've lost 1 pound...something is not working.
Do yourself a favor and get yourself a copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002 or prior version) and read it from cover to cover so you know exactly how & why this plan works and to do it correctly.
This is my 2 cents. I hope its helpful to you.
    You CAN do this!
    All the best to you!

  • JerseyGyrl, your input is worth way more than 2 cents.

    Thank you.

    What she said...
  • Yep, years ago I used to eat those Atkins bars but the bars they sell today are not the same as many years ago as JerseyGyrl explained regarding the Atkins Companies and the difference between now and years ago.

I made the mistake of buying and eating the Atkins Endulge chocolate covered coconut bars when I first started and guess what? They are 23 carbs each! Induction is 20 carbs per day. Here is the breakdown of these "fake" Atkins bars:

    Calories (230), Total Fat (10 g), Sodium (95 mg), Total Carbohydrate (23 g), Protein (19 g)

I had "assumed" they were the same as years ago but how wrong I was. Bye bye Bars! I had no idea when I first started again that Atkins Nutritionals Inc. was all about making money and NOT caring about people losing weight.

Yes, JerseyGyrl really knows her stuff!

The older books (there are many dated 2002 and earlier) have the correct information. When I first started I did not have the right book, now I do, whewwww!

    Good luck to you,
    Toby
  • i eat the bars sometimes...but only limit to a couple times a week....lately i haven't eaten them at all due to my appetite. I can see that eating them daily could slow things down. Everybody is different though and different in how their body responds to things. You might just try limiting them for a while and see if you notice improvement. good luck and yes you can do this!

I totally agree. My beef is that Atkins Nutritionals Inc. promotes the bars as being "appropriate for Induction" when they clearly are not! The bars contain milk, soy & peanuts, those ingredients are not on the acceptable foods list for Induction. And as I pointed out to Seashell, the carb calculations are a total mystery.
In an emergency, when no other low carb food is available, they can be a life saver....but.... to be eaten on a daily basis, they are pretty much a train wreck....particularly on Induction.
  • Yeah I agree with keeping induction pure. Actually these days I would rather have a hamburger patty anyway! haha. Meat is SO good! yum!
