Too much fiber...

  • So I always knew fiber was GOOD for your diet, but recently realized, this morning even, that too much of a good thing can be painful.

Started eating the original Fiber One cereal about a week ago...every other day. I eat a bigger breakfast these days, and 1/2 cup is only 60 calories, so I ate plenty of it. On the 15th I tracked 42 g. fiber, which I assume is good. Well, every other day during the rest of the week I had cereal...on the 17th I had 83 g. fiber and on the 19th it was 81 g.

Didn't realize that eating THAT much fiber for breakfast (about 42 g EACH day) would potentially be BAD with the tons of fresh veggies and fiber-rich stuff I've been addicted to recently).

Not good this morning. I'll just leave it at that. I'm going to have to start mixing my Fiber One with some other kind of low-fiber cereal I guess....or add some fruit instead or something.

Who knew too much fiber was a bad thing...
  • Haha, pardon me for laughing. Definitely mix a banana in with your cereal That should help the problem a lot.
  • I've gotta mix SOMETHING with it...I'm nearly through one box and bought a second. Plenty of cereal left to go through....
  • Banana Too many bananas make you constipated, too much fiber makes you the opposite, so a bit of both. That's why on pictures of All Bran, they always have the cereal + bananas in the picture.

Feel better though Drink LOTS of water if you eat a lot of fiber by the way. Fiber is not absorbed by the body and you need water to help push it out (if you get my drift). So H20 + banana = quick fix!
  • Well too much fiber can prevent constipation too. That happened to me when I was traveling and I thought oh, I'll just eat all veggies, I'll be fine. I was NOT fine and in more pain than I needed to be.
  • totally off topic but, is that fiber 1 cereal any good?
  • For most folks (regardless of how much or how little fiber they're used to) sudden changes up or down fiber intake can cause pretty inconvenient potty issues. The more dramatic the change, the more dramatic the potty issues.

Gradual changes tend to be more comfortable (especially if you have IBS or other sensitive digestive tract issues).

Also, drinking more fluids can help prevent fiber-related constipation.
  • You can actually cause blockages in your intestines by eating too much fiber. The fiber gets stuck and you have a hard time pushing it through...

Moral of the story is gradually work fiber in, don't eat TOO much fiber. There's a fine line you'll learn through your bathroom regularity.

Also - do NOT eat more than one FiberOne bar in a day. LOL Found that out the hard way too!
  • I battled with constipation so as soon as I found the fiber cereal I ate way to much and had horrible cramps and I haven't picked up another bowl since. I can eat the fiber one caramel delight which has less fiber but the original fiber one I can not eat because of the bad experience.
  • I think you learned that nothing is really bad or good for you. It's all about portion size. Even drinking too much water is bad for a person.
  • Definitely need more water anyway. I think I haven't been drinking enough. I LOVE the Fiber One cereal. The caramel delight is actually my favorite...

Today I'm trying the cereal again. Our local store had bananas, but they were VERY green. As in inedible green. I got some but it'll be a couple of days before I can get into 'em. So this morning I mixed a serving of the Fiber One with my husband's cornflakes that are going to go stale if someone doesn't eat them. Not ideal, but it'll do 'til the bananas are edible...

The tummy situation is vastly improved today, and I'm going to work hard on paying attention to levels of fiber each day....Do NOT want to repeat yesterday again.
  • Feral... I laughed out loud, I also found out the hard way about the fibre one bars! eeek!

I drink almost 6 ltrs of water a day so for the past 2-3 months I havent had a problem with fibre or anything along those lines. knock on wood!
  • I've found that the more fiber I eat, the more gassy I get. Which S.U.C.K.S.

    For me:

    Too little fiber = constipation
    Just enough = Okay
Too much = Gas AND constipation.

And believe me... it's a fine line. Hard to really tell.
  • Right now I'm struggling with HOW MUCH water to drink. I thought, for a while, that I was doing ok...but apparently not. I find myself feeling totally dehydrated at night, and just gulping it down during the mornings especially. It feels like I'm always thirsty...
