Clothing recommendations for Bikram yoga

  • I'm starting a 30-day Bikram (hot) yoga program soon and I'd like to purchase some new workout clothes for the occasion. The problem is that I'll be exercising in 100 degree heat, so many women wear just sports bras and little shorts, but I am definitely not comfortable with doing that at this point in my weight loss journey. Even the fitted workout tops (like long sports bras) are not something that I want to attempt right away - I want to be comfortable and focus on the exercise, not on feeling like my muffintop is hanging over my shorts!

Does anyone have recommendations on light, breathable workout clothes? Do you have a certain brand of tank top you love because it is fitted around the chest area but flows a little bit around the rest of your body? How about shorts that have a higher waist than most?

    Thanks in advance!
  • Once you start and are really HOT you really won't care and neither will anyone else ... BUT I don't like wearing shorts so I wear capris, and a tightish tank top, don't wear anything too loose because when you bend over it will fall in your face or wherever. Do NOT wear cotton, wear the wick away clothing.

Good luck, have fun, let us know how your experience goes
  • Yeah, I second you don't want loose. You don't need skin tight at all, but flowing tops will expose your abdomen and chest when you bend over, and loose shorts will not be "modest" either.
  • I agree with the previous post. I was recently doing the challenge myself and did a little bit of experimenting to find what worked best for me. Despite the heat (which actually becomes quite comforting), I found that I preferred capris or pants. My legs were sweating so much and so slick that some of the poses were actually very difficult for me the few times I wore shorts because my hands would lose their grip.
As for tops, I really really recommend the Gabrielle Reece brand work-out tops that are available at WalMart. The Danskin ones that are sold right along side are nice, too, but it was my finding that the GR ones wicked away the sweat better than anything.
I'm assuming you a bit of the ways into your challenge, but I'd still like to wish you the best of luck! It is such an awesome thing that you can do for yourself. I hyper-extended my knee and have had to take a little break, but I'm chomping at the bit to be able to go back to my classes. have fun!
