How to figure calories in homemade food....

  • I'm sure there is a thread on this somewhere, but I'm having problems finding it. Right now I am working on eating the correct portions of foods and that is easy when it is right there on the box with how much and how many calories. But how do I figure calories in foods I make from scratch. I tried by adding all the ingredients together, then dividing by servings, but I am not sure if I did it right. Can someone either point me to a thread or give me an idea of how to do it? Thanks.
  • I do it the same way you did. I use the USDA calorie counter. I can't post links yet, but Google it. It is a wonderful resource.
  • I do what you just did. Sometimes I use the about.com recipe calorie counter too, it seems to be the most accurate i can find so far http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/recipe_analysis.php
  • It is just me and hubby at home now so I can add all the ingredients calories up and divide in half. I keep post it notes in the kitchen so I can write stuff down and then figure later.
  • I also have this problem. I will check out some of these resources.
  • I just tally everything up individually and I also tally up the cups say if there is 1/2 cup serving x4 ill add 2 cups plus another thing that is 4 cups etc. Then I divide the total calories by how many cups everything equals. Then I know that one cup of whatever has such and such calories..

This is how i do it.. may not be right..
  • I do everything you do. Then, to "divide up" I measure how many cups are in dish and do the calculation. It might entail me moving the entire item pot to pot to get accurate calculation.

THis is what I use too and it rocks!
  • Howdy,
I use spark people recipe analyzer. Then add that as a custom food into my data base. In time, I will have almost all of what I fix easily accessibile.

Best wishes with what you decide to do.
