  • Congrats whatever you're doing is working!
  • lol...i was in ketosis as of yesterday to
  • how do you know if you in ketosis?
  • Quote: how do you know if you in ketosis?
A metal taste in your mouth, bad breath & smelly pee are all good indications you're in ketosis.
  • Is ketosis healthy? those all sound like horrible symptoms unless they are impurities getting out....does everything regenerate fresh?

The symptoms of ketosis may sound horrible...but...the results are great! Ketosis is when your body switches from burning carbohydrates for energy to burning fat for energy. Ketosis is acheived by eating a low carb diet...mainly meat, veggies, salads, eggs, cheese. It can be a bit rough at first but, once your body becomes accustomed to it, you feel better than you've felt in years!
  • Diabetic keto-acidosis IS dangerous.....but the ketosis of a low-carb diet is NOT.

When a diabetic's pancreas is putting out NO insulin and the person is not taking insulin....any carbs they eat are trapped in the blood and cannot get out into the cells for nourishment....so the cells are literally starving. Insulin facilitates getting the sugar from the blood to the cells.

On the Atkins diet, you are actually getting adequate carbs AND the non-diabetic, or diabetic taking insulin.....has no problem with getting carbs/sugar to the cells and no problem with starving the cells/body.

But the carefully limited net carbs puts the body into a fat-burning mode rather than a carb-burning mode....not to mention, a muscle-sparing mode....which is actually quite good for you.

The body stores about 2-3 days worth of carbs as glycogen. Once those stores are burned off......the ketosis kicks in....usually resulting in significant decrease in appetite and cravings, and also an increase in energy. It can be a bit tough the first 2-3 days as the body burns up the glycogen stores....but after that, it gets much easier.

Oh...forgot to add....you can buy ketone sticks to test your urine with in most drug stores.
  • I was too yesterday, but I had a cup of coffee this morning for the 1st time in over a week, now I am not in ketosis, So be careful. Now I am drinking water like no tomarrow!
  • Janis,

What did you put in your coffee?

Black coffee has no carbs. Half and half or full cream is fine.

However, this time around, my metabolism developed a MAJOR problem with artificial sweeteners. In fact, the amount I was putting in my beloved bucket o'coffee WAS the reason I couldn't get the diet to work and took me quite some time to figure that out...esp. since I had no problem with artificial sweeteners back in the 90's when I did Atkins. In fact, I HAVE to use Splenda now and ONLY max. of 3 packs a day (a huge reduction for me). Back in the 90's, I used Equal/aspartame in much larger quantities with no problem. This is no longer an option for me if I want this diet to work.

I'd love to know what you put in your coffee. OR did you also eat a little something with it? Or maybe an hour or so before it?

    Thanks, deena
  • I only use real cream and 1 packet of Spenda in my coffee. My hunger has demished some and may not be getting in enough calories too. I will have to start to eat more.
  • Janis,

Your coffee sounds fine. That's exactly what I put in mine.

How long have you been on Atkins?

When I was having some difficulty initially, it really helped to post all I'd eaten for that week and to have others familiar with Atkins evaluate it.

Also...the ketosis thing apparently varies with individuals. I personally have to be in ketosis (turning the sticks pink to purple) in order to lose weight....but others, like Kim, had amazing success without spilling ketones. The important thing is whether you lose weight/inches.

From past experience.....almost every time I didn't spill ketones, it turned out to be some sort of hidden simple carb/sugar in some food that I wasn't aware of.
