Is this truth: obesity and liver damages?

  • Hello,
I have just seen this post about excessive weight and liver damage: ******link deleted************** . The sources seem to be reliable, but still this doesn't seem to make sense.

PS: sorry for the obfuscated URL, I am not allowed to post links.
PPS: no, I am not affiliated with enutrizine
  • Try googling obesity and liver damage.

It's incredibly short sighted to assume that only alcohol causes liver illnesses.
  • I don't know what your original link was to, but liver damage due to obesity certainly is a reality. There is a condition called fatty liver disease that can occur when someone has rapid weight gain, especially in the stomach area. I don't know too much else about it other than it affects the liver's functions..my sister had a suspected case of it after some medication weight gain.
  • The liver is a very complex organ. Alcohol, drugs, all sorts of substances get passed through the liver for detoxification. Tylenol has a bad impact on the liver, as do many other drugs. The liver is also responsible for breakdown of fats (by producing bile) and production of cholesterol, a normal function. The statin drugs in particular really stomp on the liver.

Obesity has been regarded as the third most freqent cause of liver disease, after alcohol abuse and viral hepatitis. However, obesity has overtaken alcohol according to a BBC article.

Yet another reason to get weight down and keep it off!

  • yes, fatty liver can lead to cirrhosis of the liver just like alcohol abuse can. it is most often asymptomatic and reversible but does have a risk for being a serious disease
  • Here's what the Mayo Clinic has to say about Fatty Liver Disease: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/non...isease/DS00577

My liver enzymes were high before I started losing weight due to fatty liver. It can lead to cirrhosis as lobon said. I found it so ironic considering that I don't drink because my parents drink way too much and yet I could be the one to end up with cirrhosis. Quite an eye opener for me!
