Best way to store vegetables?

  • This may be a silly question, but when I eat healthier I also tend to eat more fresh fruits and veggies. How do y'all store them?

    I have a fridge that's a little wonky so it tends to get super cold sometimes and freeze the contents so the only thing I store in the fridge is cooked left over vegetables, carrots and a cut onion halves. Things like green peppers get chopped and go straight in the freezer; onions and potatos go in the pantry and everything else goes in tied up plastic bags in a basket on the counter. The only problem is recently some of my squash has started going moldy really quickly ( a week sooner than it used to go bad). I just don't know if it would hold up well to being refrigerated. What do you think?
  • One thing that may help with a fridge that sometimes freezes things - put the sensitive things near the door. It's the back of the fridge that is coldest.

    I refrigerate a lot of things that could be stored at room temp because I live in southern California, and unless I run the a/c all day when I'm not home (*not* going to happen), in the summer things are sitting out at over a 100 degrees, which is not what they call a "cool, dark place." It's a short period of time when the temps in my apartment are "cool" during the day. Texas might be similar

    I assume you mean winter squash? I wouldn't think refrigerating (keeping it away from freeze zones) would hurt it. And sometimes some batches from the store just mold more than others.
  • Actually it's italian squash/zuchinni. I'm contemplating wrapping it in newspaper actually since this lot recently have been a lot juicier than usual. The moisture can't be helping.
  • Oh, I always have put those in the fridge. They're refrigerated at the markets I go to.
  • Or try putting a paper towel in the bag with it, to absorb the moisture.
