Staying on track when your sick?

  • I started getting sick about 10 days ago and it was slow n steady but 2 days ago it got real bad and I went to the doctor. He told me I had bronchitis. I'm trying to figure out a way to stay on track plus get better. Theres is no way Im going to get enough calories in like I should be doing ... I am just NOT hungry and if I overeat then I get sick. And I got up this morning and thought id do one of my walking tapes ( usually I go to the gym or out walking ) and did a 2 mile walk on one of the walking tapes and was exhausted and not feeling good so I laid back down. Is there anything that you all would suggest that I eat that is light on the stomach and healthy ... I just dont want my body to go into starvation mode while Im sick.
  • Honestly I'm sick now and if I tried to stick to my diet right now I'd probably end up totally malnourished. Eat and drink what you can and I honestly wouldn't exercise if you have bronchitis. Not until it clears up. You could keep yourself from getting better, and the bronchitis could turn into something worse.
  • thanks heater. good point about not trying to exercise. i guess ive just gotten use to taking time out of my day to make sure i get some sort of exercise in.

i hope you feel better soon too. this time of the year stinks for getting sick!
  • It does stink doesn't it!
You can still take daily walks if you like. I bet that would actually be good for you. Just nothing too strenuous. This way you don't give up the time that's normally for exercising and you don't get out of habit?
  • I wouldn't exercise honestly- I use that time and sleep more- I figure that helps me get better faster.

As for dieting I don't fall off the band wagon but I do eat as long as I feel hungry to get nourishment- I low carb it but usually I'll have some hot chicken noodle at least once when I'm sick
  • I think all diet and exercise plans are off when you are sick. Your focus should be on resting and doing everything to help your body recover. Sometimes when I am at the beginning of a possible cold/illness and am just starting to feel like I might be getting sick, I will halt my exercise routine for several days just so I am not wearing my body down and I feel this can help my body stay stronger and fight off the illness faster. With the eating, I would try to eat a little something every few hours, maybe soup, crackers, half a PB&J sandwich, a yogurt, etc. I don't think your body will necessarily go into starvation mode especially since you aren't exercising and moving around to burn as many calories as you generally do. If you aren't feeling too badly, try to eat your normal intake but if you just aren't hungry I wouldn't force myself to eat more than a little bit here and there.
  • Just get plenty of fluids and rest. Eat what you can (continuing to eat healthy). As you get better, start to exercise again and increase your intake. Don't worry about forcing yoruself to eat and don't use the lack of eating while you were sick as an excuse to eat unhealthy when you do recover and you should be fine.
  • Thank you to all that answered! I appreciate the input.
I'm happy to report that I feel GREAT now. I took a few days and just completely rested, no exercise. I ate when I could but just made healthy choices when I did eat. Last night I took my niece out trick or tricking and we ended up walking almost 10 miles! ( 5 out and 5 back ).
  • I am glad you are feeling better!! And WTG on the walk!
  • If I'm not hungry, I don't eat. I figure my body knows what its doing. Also, if I have been sick and not really eating and I want a piece of toast dripping with peanut butter, I'll eat it. My body will get back to normal as soon as my cold is gone so I don't sweat it.
