Product CC change - I'm P'Od!

  • I bring my lunch to work every day and alternate between soups and salad. My standard salad dressing for the last couple of years has been balsamic glaze made by Gia Russa. It has that balsamic vinegar taste without the "bite" and has a thicker texture that makes it nicer on salads. At 5 calories per tablespoon, I felt the freedom to drizzle it on rather liberally and enjoy.

BUT ... yesterday, someone asked me the sodium content of the product, so I looked closely at the nutritional label (hadn't really looked at it for a while) and saw, to my horror, that now the calorie count was listed as 35 calories per tablespoon!!! And 9g of sugars!! What the ...?! That changes my "dressing" calorie count potentially from 15-25 calories to 100-150 or more!! Which I had NOT counted, of course. And NO real idea how long it's been that way. Apparently the company reformulated the recipe, while keeping the SAME front label, the SAME product name, etc etc. If you look online at some of the calorie counting websites, it still lists the product at 5 cal per TB.

Be ever vigilent -- check those labels!!!
  • I hear ya - one of my favorite drinks changed from sucralose to aspartame. (Splenda to NutraSweet in brand name terms). I could totally taste the difference. I don't drink it any more.
  • The sad thing is if you complain to the company they send back a form response saying "taste tests show that consumers prefer this" To me that's basically saying "so you don't count"
I had that problem with Dannon Light and Fit, it had been 60 calories for an 8oz cup and it changed to 80 calories for a 6 oz cup.
