uncontrollable hunger

  • Ive been doing the Low Carb WOE for a couple years now, but my problem usually starts a week before "that time of the month" I get unbelievably hungry! Its an honest hunger, not just a hungry mouth that wants sweets. I want to eat full course meals. Ive tried adding another multi-vit about mid day, and another chromium pic. But Im at a loss as to what to do .......any suggestions or ways of tricking ourselves?

Your help would be very much appreciated
  • try increasing your protein and calcium... see if that helps..

sue????? come back here!!!! [sue knows EVERYTHING!!!!]
  • Would you believe i was almost on at that time but DD was on so I went to bed to read.

Jiff I am clueless for this one. I agree increase the protein and cal but what about magnesium? one thing that helps with the feeling of satisfaction is eating fat. try during this time to increase the fat intake. use plenty of butter, or eat some of the fatter meats, let me do some checking on this one. I think that there is some vits that can help with this. If i remember that was something about this not to long ago i had read. (not the hunger during TOM) but the hunger.

In the mean time what vits do you take? I take Potassium and a cal/mag/zinc combo along with my chromium
I know for me i have a very hard time staying OP. do you eat only 3 meals daily? what if you added some snacks just before you know it is comming? maybe a shake (there are some wonderful shakes in the miscl recipe section.)
  • see??? i KNEW you'd know something useful sue!!!

since my TOM returned <grrrrr>, i've been actually getting hungry just before, as well. and without thinking, i've been adding a couple of snacks, mostly soybeans and jerky, although cheese is fair game as well. well, just about any form or protein in fact, but i'm keeping it to one simple rule: it has to have at least 50% more protein than carbs, so things like peanut butter don't usually make the list.

and it has helped a lot.
  • I think one of the low carb books has something about PMS eating disorders. Can't remember which one. Try going to the Atkins Friends website. They have a lot of useful info there and perhaps one of their members could help you out.
  • Ok, so I've been seemingly obsessed with periods and such recently in my quest to reproduce, I find that having an extra helping of protein coupled with some fat helps stave off the cravings. Hope it helps!
  • thankyou all for your imput
Thankyou so much for your imput ladies......I have a long list of vitamins that I take, and always boost my multi, chromium and an extra shake mid-day with a few more psylium husk caplets to feel full. Its not a craving I have, it's genuine hunger. I tend to keep extra boiled eggs in the fridge, but that doesnt do the trick.

I hadnt heard of an extra calcium or mag, but I will certainly give it a try!

    Thankyou again!!
  • what i would also suggest is at that time eat. just watch what you eat. your body can handle more food and cals on this diet than on a low fat. have a head of lettuce there and much on that. also try for a cold salad. like a chef salad with eggs and protein, or actually make some thing at that time. Tuna melt (In a bowl) the actual making of the food willhelp take your fmind off the food.

the other things i would suggest is to drink a glass of fluid. the reason i say that is the body does not always recognise it's thirsty and sends signals for the body to feell hunger. (one of the old diet tricks) so you eat. what may be happening physilogically is that your body is one who usally will gain a few lbs of fluid during that TOM (I am guessing here) so it starts to store the fluid and line the uterus at this time. and now your body is feeling the effects of this and sending signals that you are hungry.

Just a thought!! but definatly try anything. one of them will help.

  • Hi Sue
I will give this a try, I just finished some cheese and a big bottle of water (not a good idea before bed) but its better than the alternative.
    Thankyou
