ALA? Too much of a good thing?

  • Hi there. Second time around posting here! I'm trying to get back on the wagon again. So...I've tried eating different amounts of carbs and have decided that keeping them low, at about 20 grams\day, is the best for me. I've also tried eating a higher carb count and then taking ALA to counteract some of those carbs. I take 1000 to 1200 mgs a day. Does anyone else take ALA and how many milligrams?
  • I just count carbs, and I don't even trust the math on the 'net' carb business. I do give myself a little leeway for fiber, but don't agree that it's a 1 for 1 trade.

I don't do ALA because I don't think the way metabolism works its possible to really "counteract" carbs. If you understand the biochemistry that takes place eating carbs (you can read Good Calories Bad Calories by Gary Taubes for an explanation that's not selling ANYTHING), you realize that it really is just the amount of carb (and maybe 'sweet taste') that has an effect on insulin & other hormones. Nothing exists to counteract it -- except maybe self control ;-)
