IUD and weight loss

  • Anyone else have an IUD? I have the Mirena and I have heard that it can cause weight gain and make it hard to loose weight. I have gained 20 lbs since I had it put in 14 months ago, but then again I have also been home with a new baby! If I heard someone else had one and had no problems loosing weight I would feel better!
  • i dropped 25 lbs while using mirena, which i had put in when i was about 3 mths post-partum. the amount of hormones it delivers is pretty low compared to the standard pill or depo.

if you're conscientious with your plan, the IUD shouldn't have much of an effect one way or the other on your weight loss. good luck!
  • Great, thanks!
  • I don't have the Mirena but I do have the copper iud. When I first had it put in I bloated terribly for maybe 4-5 months. My cycles are harder on me cramp wise etc but all in all I am glad I have it. I would say that the dose of hormones in the Mirena is so low that it would not have an affect on your weight loss efforts once your body had time to adjust to it being there.
  • My baby is almost 2 months old now and I just got counseled on the effects of Mirena by my doctor to see if I would like to use it and according to the little booklet they gave me it says it has not been shown to cause weight gain...I guess I'll see about that when I get it!
  • I just had mine inserted this past Friday, so only a few days. My weight has gone up two pounds, but I also have my period and ate a lot of junk over the long weekend. LOL

I'm hoping it won't be *too* bad losing weight with the Mirena. I wouldn't think it would be any different than with BCPs, and I was at my skinniest when I was on those, so I'm not too worried.
