ideal body weight and protein needs

  • a great find!!! from a thread on spotlighthealth.com:

"Your protein requirement is more based on frame size than weight.

Here is the formula I was given (by a dietician) to figure out how much protein you should consume every day.

    Formula:

    Take a base of 105
Add 5 lbs. to base number for every inch over 5 feet
add 10% of that total if you have a large frame OR
add 5% of that total if you have a medium frame.
Divide that number by 2.2 to get weight in kilograms
Then multiply by 0.9 gm/kg if you want to loose weight OR
Multiply by 0.8 gm/kg if you want to maintain your weight"

sooo, for me, at 5'9" with a large frame, i need at least 67 grams of protein [i'm calling it 70, easier to deal with] to lose weight, and i must confess that i haven't always been hitting it the past week or so.

but the surgeon wants me at 80-100 grams per day because he says that some authorities believe that the weight loss is better at the higher protein levels. works for me!!!!!!

so, what do you all think???
  • I agree I have nto done the math but i know i usually hit higher than that. I also reccomend adding more if you ae doing strenous activity such as intensive aerobics or weight lifting
  • I bet your surgeon is right. My mom was told that she should get around 100 grams a day also to lose weight. Protein sticks with you longer than carbs (not as quick burning). So she is all about protein to stick with you and fiber to keep you feeling full.
    congrats on your progress!
  • So that would put me at 60 grams a day. Honestly, I have NO idea how much I am getting in each day. I know when I was working with a trainer and weight lifting, she wanted me to have 200 grams a day and that was pretty tough to get in. 60 sounds like I might already do that. I'm a meat eater.
  • Sandi add a can of tuna that will add about 25 in your day each serving is 7 and each can has 2.5 servings. and you get great andioxidents which help the heart, mind and as well it does boost the weight loss.

but if you figure that meat has 7 grams of prptein in an oz that wil help you figure out how much you are getting in or visit www.fitday.com

i can easily get in 120 - 150 in a day but 200 sounds like the trainer was trying to feed you on a much higer protein level that you really needed. even with my muscle mass (shich is qirwe large. I go for 1 to gram of protein for each 1 lb of LEAN muscle mass i do when am very serious I have about 130 lb of lean mass so my needs are quite high. many very serious and i do mean very serious muscle builders like the competition people use sclase that are like 1.5 - 2 gamsp of protein for each lb of lean mass. so actually i think that was a bit to high for your needs. unless you were trying to put on a huge amount of muscle mass!!
  • Ya, I thought it was a bit extreme. Was doing the protein shake thing and having soublw chicken sandwichs (only 1 bun).
  • so I'm supposed to have 43 grams a day..
how do I know how much protein is in each food?
do any of you have a list?
does peanut butter have protein in it?
or are we talking just about meat and seafood?

    blonde, as usual...

  • Hey Dana!
I have really gotten into this protein thing lately. Most things I eat (cereal, soy milk, lean cuisines, and whatever is for dinner) seem to have the protein listed on the labels. The only things that wont will be meat (which I dont eat!!) my mom does and she gets the info from health/weight loss books. Most of your protein will be in your meat, cheese, and milk unless you eat protein bars or add protein powder to shakes. Protein is supposed to stay with you longer and help maintain your muscle so you dont lose it while you lose weight. (we need all the muscles we can keep since it burns TONS of calories!!)
    I hope this helped some...

  • Oh-according to the book I am reading peanut butter has 4 grams of protein per tablespoon. Of course brands will vary. The only problem with it is the calories as far as I am concerned!
  • Peanut Butter is so worth it to me I have it about once a week. Nothing better then a pb&j

I had egg whites for breakfast.. 1/4 cup gives you 6 grams of protein!!!

I never thought about protein much before - very cool. (more fun then counting points!)
