Doing WW and Taking Warfarin

    I hope someone has an answer for me.

    Does Warfarin/Coumadin make weight loss difficult?
    I hope the answer is "no."

  • Sorry, I wish I knew. On a side note, I don't want to try WW again because the last two times I did, I found out I was pregnant two weeks later!
  • I don't think a blood thinner makes losing weight harder, but you should really talk to your MD about this. He/she will have the definitive answer for you...

  • No .You just need to careful when eat green leafy veggies.Consistency is they key here.They are not off limits but make sure you are eating consistent amounts as they can affect your protime.If you eat 2 cups, make sure you do that every day or every other day.Just be consistent.

    I really miss my big salads. (I was told I could eat 2-3oz. once a week.)
    And, I was told not to eat blueberries. When they are in season, I devour them. So, I'm freezing them now. Come November, when I get off warfarin, I'll probably turn blue from eating so many.

  • warfarin does not slow weight loss. You can eat anything you want, including leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, blueberries, etc. You just have to make sure to eat approximately the same amount of fruits/veggies every week or else it can make your INR differ week to week.
    I have been on warfarin for 6 years. I eat anything I want to, I just make sure to eat approx. the same amounts every week and my warfarin dose has been the same for over three years with no changes.

  • All the docs and info about the medication say no.

    The people taking it say a lot different. I've been on it for 6 months now, and let me tell you, I was hard core WW and though my weight hasn't gone up too much, I don't fit in my clothes. I'm bloated all the time.

    Google it, you'll find thousands of people complaining about the lack of energy/stamina associated with taking it, and complaining that they are gaining weight like crazy.

    Its probably the things associated with the Coumadin though. I had a DVT in my calf. I can't do any of my usuals...soccer, rugby, no spinning etc. nothing involving contact or that could cause injury or internal bleeding. And you can't tell me thats good for morale, I've played soccer and softball since I was a child. I also don't have the stamina to run, I'm short of breath on exertion. Walking too much with or without compression stockings leaves my leg in pins and needs.

    So does it cause weight loss? Hmmm tricky question. Does it help with avoiding weight gain? NOT AT ALL.

    I take 16mg a day.

    This doesnt sound good at all, yeah i have heard quite a number of people complaining about this stuff, one thing i would like to know is whether you need any form of prescription or you just get it off the counter?
  • My doctor said lots of his patients complained of being tired. He didn't think it cause weight gain. Wrong!
