moving home with my parents...

  • i am going to school next month, so i moved back in with my parents for the month of july before i leave for the east coast. i have been living on my own for the past four years, and i generally keep only things in my apartment that i know i won't binge on.

    now i'm at my parents house and there is literally food EVERYWHERE...cookies, muffins, fresh bread, pie (and this is not even the half of it..) i am tempted ALL THE TIME and it starts to wear on me. last night at dinner i ate half portions of everything but then had a small piece of pie..and a small scoop of ice cream...then a little piece of cookie..and a little piece of cinnamon roll...it just all adds up!

    any advice for not bingeing when i have no control over the food in the house?

  • Try to stay out of the house as much as possible! Seriously. Spend evenings with a friend, or at the library or park, anything. Also, eat and then brush your teeth and use mouthwash. That helps me. When something is absolutely calling your name, go for a 20 minute walk first. That can make a really big difference.
  • If someone can figure this out, please let me know. This is my problem when I visit my dad's house. Cookies EVERYWHERE. And I can't say no to cookies.

    The one thing that I've tried to do is just make sure I'm going to exercise. Like if I eat a little more than usual, I exercise more than usual. Its not a complete balance, but it does help.
  • I agree to stay out of the house as much as possible or at least lock yourself up in your room lol!
  • when I lived with my parents, I just made the rule - no going in the kitchen. Go around. That or ask your parents to put the foods you crave somewhere else and don't tell you where, that may help? Would they be willing to not have as much of that stuff around while you're living there?
  • I'm living with the rents until I start law school in August. It can be tough.

    I usually just spend as much time as possible away from the kitchen. I read outside or watch movies in my room. If I'm not walking by the food or around my parents while they're snacking, it's a lot easier to keep myself on plan.
  • I'm living with my parents this summer until I find a job, and it definitely is tough to stay on plan! Especially since I've been going through a tough time emotionally, and my mother's solution to that is to provide me with lots of cookies and hot cocoa...

    I do stay away from the kitchen, and at least a few nights a week I tell my mom I'll do my own thing for dinner, or ask what she's going to cook and figure out ahead of time how I can eat some of it without going WAY over my calories. I've also started eating much lighter breakfasts and lunches, since I know dinner will always be an epic event.
  • Have you talked to your parents about it? Since you are only going to be at home for a month, it wouldn't be that difficult for them to cut down on the sweets for a handful of weeks. Otherwise, stay out of the house as much as possible, and go grocery shopping with Mom/Dad to make sure there are healthy options in the house. Designate the fattening foods as "off-limits" - just don't give in! When you feel overwhelmed by a craving, stay away from the kitchen and take a walk outside if possible.
  • Tell me about it!!! I'm in exactly the same situation, I just graduated from college in May and since then I've been living with my dad and stepmom. Not only is it horrible to have to be back at home, but my father insists on having ice cream and chips and other delicious treats at the house. My solution is to plan everything. If you have a specific food plan for each day, ensuring that you're never hungry, it's easier to avoid those temptations.
