Running

  • Is there anyone who runs on this thread? I want to start, but it is July in Arizona so.........

Anyway, I still want to start. I loved running when I was in my twenties and I just fell out of it for a while. I am now 42 so it will not be as easy for me, but I am interested in hearing from some of you ladies closer to my age who are runners. Will I be able to run as far as five miles a day easily or will it always seem difficult now that I am older? Let me know of other issues you have encountered that a younger lady may not. Thanks!

Hi of course you can start running at 42!! I started at 48 and am now 52 and still run... The trick is to start very gradually... warm up 5 mins... run 1 min. walk 90 seconds 3x/wk ....

There is the couch to 5k that is very very helpful and doable. Google the plan but the first week is what I mentionned above. There are also on i-Tunes some free downloadable Podcasts with music that stops and starts for walking and running times... Excellent music...
  • OOoops I didn't answer all your questions....

Is there anyone who runs on this thread? Yep, me and many others, I'm 52 and proud of it and I've been running for years....

Will I be able to run as far as five miles a day easily or will it always seem difficult now that I am older? Yes yo ucan run five miles after starting gradually, it'll take a couple of months but you can do it NO it will not seem as difficult as the younger counter parts, because you will be in better shape after running that your younger counter parts. The young folks who have been running for ages will be better conditionned but at 42 you can get in extremely good shape in no time...

Let me know of other issues you have encountered that a younger lady may not.The only other issue for me was my knees, but with weight training and strengthening of my legs, and Glucosamine, I can say that I rarely have sore knees anymore...

My biggest suggestion would be to get a good pair of running shoes at a reputable running store where they analyse your gait and check to see if you pronate or over pronate...

Hope this helps, keep us postd on your progress...
  • Lots of runners on this site, there is a monthly running thread you might like:

    July runners

I'm 41 (42 in October), I doubt you'll have much difficulty getting back into the sport due to your age. Good luck!
  • I've basically never run and started last year (at 34) so it's quite doable if you give yourself the time. Lots of people like the couch to 5k plan but I found that a bit accelerated for me so I choose one that had a more gradual build up (13 week learn to run) it was in a book. I think that was the title.
  • I love running! Such a great sport. I think the main thing is building up a base of miles for endurance.
