Having Trouble Getting Protein Over 20% - Ideas?

  • Hi! I'm not on the Atkins diet, but thought this would be the best forum to get help on reducing carbs and increasing protein. I've been putting my foods into fitday.com for the last few days, and the best I can get is 66% carbs, 17% protein and 18% fat. I'm thinking the excess carbs is the reason I'm not losing, not even one pound, though I've cut out all bad snacks, and have been going to the gym 3-4 times a week for the past 2.5 weeks.

I'd like to eat high protein foods that don't have a ton of fat. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
  • The standard equation for balance is 40% carbs, 30% protein, 30% fat. That's not a 'high protein' diet- it's just considered a 'balanced' one.

Getting that protein in can be hard. The easiest, most economically way is to use protein powder. I'm really picky about this stuff though- I like the EAS brand you get at Costco. It seems to disolve better that other kinds. I use it in smoothies for breakfast. I've used the vanilla flavor in fruit salad- mix it in with the yogurt. you'll hardly even know it's in there.

Other options are things from Morning Star Farms et al. I really like the Morning Star Farms Sausage Patties I get from Costco. Two or 3 of those for breakfast and I've gotten in some quick AM protein. Beans are good too but have a higher carb-to-protein ratio. Cottage Cheese is a magic food. Boca burgers are
  • Crap! It posted before I was done. Anyway, Boca burgers are a taste I've come to accept. I don't love them but I don't HATE them either. I put them in wraps with some hummus and veggies and they're pretty good.

Of course there are lean meats etc, I just wanted to give some less obvious ideas.
  • Thanks so much Bindersbee! The less obvious was what I was looking for. I go to Costco regularly, so I'll definitely look for those products. I just started eating Cottage Cheese again, for protein increase, but didn't know it was that great, I'll definitely be getting more! I've been leary of trying Protein Powder, just because there are so many different kinds, and I don't want to have to go through a bunch before I find one that I like.
  • How about whey protein. You can make a tasty smoothie with 17-25 grams of protein.
  • Any recipe ideas for Vanilla flavoured protein smoothies?
