stubled across this page when doing a search after a run

  • Ok so I am totally new at this. I was doing a search when I came across this site, and I am really glad I did.

First let me start by asking the original question...

I went for a run this morning with my boyfriend and pepper (dogsitting) and it was pretty warm. The trail we were running on had little shade and I was having a hard time running. I became fatigued and when we got home I felt dizzy and lightheaded. My boyfriend pointed out that my face was really red and suggested I take a cool shower. I don't work out regularly so I can imagine that this was just a way for my body to cope but I wanted to see what others were saying about a similar condition. So any advice on that would be much appreciated!

Next I want to say I am really glad I registered and look forward to reading others stories and struggles. Good luck everyone.

Oh ya and can anyone tell me how to get one of those progress bar things? I think its a great idea but might wait till I make a little more progress! Thanks in advance!

  • If you were feeling lightheaded like that you probably were overdoing it, and overheated. If it was warm out then it adds to that. I would slow down the pace and as you keep running regularly you'll pick up speed and it'll become easier. Good luck!
  • My face gets really red when I exercise in the heat. It's trying to cool me down. The fact that you were lightheaded means you over did it a little. The advice on a cool shower was good I think, as long as you weren't still lightheaded when you took a shower, since you could fall and hit your head. Maybe having a drink and sitting with your head down for a bit would have helped.
  • actually, ive always heard the opposite...that taking a cold shower is bad for you if you have a mild heat stroke ( because your body must warm up even further to counteract the cold water, and all the blood will further rush closer to the surface of your body....Same issue with having hypothermia, but backwards...if your body temp falls, you dont want to take a hot shower, because it will pull the warming blood away from your vital organs and out closer to the skin.....this is what ive been told, in regards to recovering after marathons...they always give the finishers space heating blankets right at the end, to help slowly bring their body temp back up, so they dont go into hypothermia..
Anyway, sounds like you were working a little too hard fro the heat...make sure to drink more fluids WHILE exercising, and where a hat that covers your head and your face...that will help alot.......feel free to slow down and walk when you feel like you are getting lightheaded...its the first symptom of heat stroke...try and run outside earlier in the morning, if you can....
  • and

If you got dizzy, you might have been dehydrated or you might just be heat sensitive. If you're not used to exercise, it could make either of those problems worse. Drink plenty of water and try to stay cool.

Can't wait to get to know you better!

  • I get red-faced after a long walk myself. A shower (I'm not very comfortable with cold showers, but as cool as I can tolerate, and even a warm shower isn't bad, as soon as you get out the water on you starts to evaporate, but YMMV) and lying down for half an hour or so with the fan or a/c on help get me back to normal
  • Hi and welcome!

Have you found the runners' threads?
  • many thanks!
Thanks for all the advice, i felt much better after the cool shower and some cold water but i think i may have over heated a tiny but. No more running around noon for me!!! Thanks for welcoming me to the group and i will take it easy if running in heat. The hat idea was a great suggestion and i will definitely be wearing one next time! thanks again...
  • could happen is you haven't eaten anything, are dehydrated, if it is too hot, if you are pushing yourself too hard or if you are diabetic and you blood sugar is low.
  • try running at dusk, its much cooler and enjoyable. Which makes for successul weight loss and actually doing the run everyday. If you run in the heat and get sick, chances of running again any time soon is unlikely.
