I don't know about self-hypnosis, but I most certainly DO rely on
self-talk.
I tell myself things constantly. I'll see something that I think that I "want" and talk myself out of it. "This won't help you, it'll only harm you." "The taste is temporary, the calories lasting". "You WILL feel crappy AFTER you eat it". and so on and so on. It's gotten me out of many a hairy situation.
When facing a particularly challenging day, food wise, I'll think my thoughts through ahead of time and map out a plan in my mind.
I talk myself into exercise at times when I don't feel like doing it.
I talk myself into preparing and cooking on the occasions when I just don't feel like it.
Which sounds to me, like what you are calling self-hypnosis.
