Carb Count

  • I read that carbs should be between 80-85. I'm using the My Plan area at MF to keep track of everything.

Yesterday, my carbs would have been 92 if I had eaten my 5th MF product...... (it was my first day and I was way too full to eat/drink anything else... I underestimated how full I would be and spaced the morning out too far in order to give me more at night)

Today they're going to be 87.

Yesterday's L&G was chicken, cauliflower, and broccoli. Today's L&G will be chicken, asparagus, and mushrooms.

    What am I doing wrong?
  • Oh... and what day am I supposed to start feeling cr@ppy? This is day 2 and I feel perfectly fine. A friend and his wife are doing this plan and said they felt really awful for a while at the beginning. He's gone right now, so I can't ask him when they started to feel like crud. Thanks.
  • Kay- i'm sorry that i don't know how to answer your question about the carbs. but, i can tell you that i NEVER felt unwell in the beginning of my medifast journey.
  • Really? Oh.... I hope I'm one of the lucky ones then! I teach first graders so I need all of the energy I can get. LOL

I got my package in on Thursday and decided to go ahead and start it on Friday because I'd have the weekend to nap if I needed it. I can't do that when I'm teaching. I fully expected to be lethargic and headachey today, but I've felt just fine.

  • There are two kinds of bars - old and new. I believe the new ones are called crunch. If you are picking the old bars on your Medifast site where you are logging your food, it would cause your carbs to be too high since with the old bars, they had more carbs in them and you could only eat one/day. As far as your veggies, broccoli is one of the highest carb count veggies (cauliflower is medium-carbs) so maybe try some of the lowest carb selections.
  • I have the new crunch bars so I know that's not it. Hmmm... I need to take a closer look at the veggies chart I guess. I thought as long as you chose your 1 1/2 cups from anywhere on the list that you should be fine.

    Thanks!

    *scurries off to investigate*
  • Ouch! The mushrooms (I planned 1/2 cup) are in the lowest carbs group and the asparagus (I planned 1 cup) is in the moderate carbs. Awww.... geez..... looks like I'm not going to be able to eat much of the higher carb veggies then. I haz a sad.
  • I know you have the new bars, but are you entering the new bars on the website or the old bars? When I first entered my stuff on the website, I clicked on the old bars (even though I was eating the new ones) and it raised my carb count too high. Does that make sense?
  • Yeah... that makes sense.... I noticed bars and crunch bars when I was entering my data though.... I just double checked and I have the crunch bars marked not the bars....
  • Thanks!
  • Just keep your carbs 100 or under per day. A lot of people try to keep their carbs at 85, and if that helps you lose, go for it. I aim for 85, but of course there are days when I have closer to 100 carbs. I felt sick the first week of medifast, but not everyone does. You're lucky.
  • I've been under 100 grams every day so far....

I really expected to feel awful and be hungry all of the time. The complete opposite is true! I can't believe how great I feel with this! It was my birthday today and I wasn't tempted by sweets once... I'm full.. I don't get the cravings to snack... it's fabulous! I wish I had done this 10 years ago!
  • Quote: I read that carbs should be between 80-85. I'm using the My Plan area at MF to keep track of everything.
FWIW, my carbs ran close to 100g (and calories close to 1000) each day. I tried to keep the carb number on the Food Plan around 95g to allow for any hidden carbs. I did try being at 80g carb/800 cal at different times during my Medifast weight loss and only ended up hungry (and cranky).

My favorite veggies always seemed to be in the highest carb group. I also tried doing the lettuce/cuke thing but was so hungry and cranky that I scared my poor DH.

So, I ended up eating my broccoli and baby bellas a lot and just logged everything in. Some days I would have to have more lower carb MF meals like shakes or COB soup to keep carbs under 100g but it worked. I think it takes a couple of weeks to figure out what works best for you in the carb/calories ranges.

Another point: when I was doing MF a LOT of people simple grabbed 5 MF meals, did their L&G & never logged in any of their foods. They followed the Quick Start Guide and lost weight just fine (and probably with a lot less stress from trying to do a daily balancing act).

So how's it still going? The first week is somewhat difficult getting used to the new foods and drastic eating changes and trying to figure everything out. It gets easier as time goes on.

p.s. I'm also suesully over on the mymedifast boards if you ever want to PM me.
  • Remember when on Medifast that having each of the 5 meals are important as well. It gives you the full amount of supplements and calories that you need to maintain your activity. I hear people all the time that do well say that they don't need the 5th meal, but they do to keep their metabolism going and keep their body from going into starvation mode.

Help with your lean and green. Get a copy of their choices guides from the site and you will be able to quickly pick your green and know how much your protein should weigh and more choices.

They also have a condiment list and various other helpful files. I also suggest you weigh your lean choice out till you get a better idea of how much your different choice take up on the plate.

I was one of those that didn't have any problems the first week. I have some folks I know that do have a tough few days and those that sail right into the program. Most often I find out after talking to them it has more to do with the way they ate before going on the plan.

Good luck, it sounds like you are off to a great beginning!
