  • Words of hope there - it CAN be controlled, even though it's going to be a fight. There are so many forces working against health in the US, because there's money to be made on obesity. There's the food itself (when was the last time you saw a TV commercial for lettuce???), the diet products for when we go overboard with the food, the medical community there to support the obesity-related disease, and self-help industry when we start to hate what we've become.

I posted this over on Weight Loss Support a week or so ago - that I've noticed that the most successful losers and maintainers are breaking the consumerist chain - they eat very little of the processed foods, they don't go out to eat nearly as much, and the vast majority have forsaken the fads and the pills for simple "eat less, move more." You won't hear about them in the mass media BECAUSE NOBODY IS MAKING MONEY OFF THEM!

Great article. Printing that one for the reference file. Thanks!
  • Thanks for the article, I definitely agree with it- I feel the effects myself on a daily basis!
  • Guilty as charged here!!
  • I totally saw myself in that article!
The article states "Retrain the brain to think, "I'll hate myself if I eat that," Kessler advises. Lay down new neural reward circuits by substituting something else you enjoy, like a bike ride or a healthier food." This can't be a healthy way to think, saying you hate yourself. But society obviously makes it so hard! It is so hard to maintain portion control when the portions sold at the stores are HUGE. I bought the smallest bag of potato chips while I was waiting for my oil change a few weeks ago. There were over 2 servings in that bag. I like chips, but I want to eat in moderation. I had to ask the cashier for the stapler to staple the bag shut so I didn't end up eating the entire bag. I remember when a snack bag of chips used to just be 1 serving!

Now the food industry has repackaged what used to be "normal" snack sizes 15 years ago and sells them as "100 calorie packages" and charges more for it. Argh!
