traveling for work - one first week of ww

  • Hi,
Does anyone have any tips for me since I am traveling out of town all next week for work. I really don't want to fall off the wagon but I will be eating out in restaurants. Also, I plan to get weighed on Thursday.

I don't think I have a fridge in my hotel room either but I have stocked up on a few snacks, craisins and fibre granola type bars. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
  • Depending on what kind of hotel you're staying in, you may be able to request a fridge by asking at the desk (some 3 stars, most 4 stars and up). I'd call and ask before you get there since they take a little time to cool down.

When eating out at restaurants, don't be afraid to order ala carte, modify dishes, or order things with dressing or sauce on the side. Most restaurants are used to people with special dietary requirements. Sometimes the only solution is to just order a standard meal and only eat half. Without a fridge, it feels like you're wasting food... but try to ignore that inner voice of your mother telling you to finish your plate. Sacrifices sometimes need to be made to help the pounds come off.

If you know in advance that you will be eating at a chain restaurant, check online to see if there is nutrition information posted somewhere on the net.

It can be really hard to plan when you're traveling. Try your best and don't beat yourself up too much if you show a small gain. Good luck!
  • Do you have the dining out book? That could help a bit if you are eating at the chain places. When I went away for a convention I brought lots of on plan snacks & discovered that the hotel kept free fresh fruit in their work out area & sold it in their gift shop too I did request a fridge and got one for my stay which helped me out a lot.

You can make it work Good luck!
  • thanks - yes, I have the dining out guide and I just called the hotel, no fridges left - dang!!! I don't arrive until tomorrow night so I think I will ask again - who knows, it is a 5 star hotel so it kind of surprises me that their isn't at least a mini-bar that I could empty and put in my stuff.

Be REALLY careful about emptying a mini-bar. Most of them are now on sensors and when something leaves the fridge for more than a few minutes, it will go on your bill. You can get it taken back off by showing that you didn't consume it, but it can be a hassle arguing with the front desk staff about your bill. Last year when we were at a convention, some of my coworkers picked up a bunch of things on the minibar to look at them. They had something like a $200 extra charge when they went to check out (and were in a hurry to get to the airport shuttle).

Definitely ask again about a fridge when you get there. If you are there for a long stay, one may free up and you'll want to be at the top of the list.
