  • I'm not really sure where to post this topic so I'm starting here with it.

Last year I started working out every other day and attending a gym for four months straight. But I was constantly weighing and measureing and between the scale & measurements NOT going down nor were my clothes fitting any better I threw it all away!!

I just started working out again last month and decided to try to keep up with an every day routine or at least 5 days per week.
BUT I have also decided to ONLY allow myself visitation of the scale & tape measture ONCE PER MONTH on the 1st.
*(Actually the 1st was a poor choice as it's been when I get my monthly thus far )*

I am wondering if doing the once a month weighing and measuring has been successful for anyone else? Please share your once a month successes or failures here with me, I'd like to tally some results.

    Thanks to you!
  • I do better when I am not on the scale every five minutes, so yes, it has helped me, but I have been doing it every 2 weeks actually. I got a notebook for this purpose, where I write down my weight and several measurements. Sure, there is a lot of worrying between weigh-ins, but I find it nicer that I actually see results and it seems to move in a more predictable way, and I'm not freaked out because it's my TOM and i'm bloated that day and retaining water, etc.

Weighing less often keeps me a bit saner, I think.
  • I tried it when I first started but I couldn't do it. After reading and reading on how our bodies work then I started to relax and not beat myself up for my dips and rises in weight. I do however take measurements once a month and that is cool to see
  • I think there isn't one right way. Different things work for different people, and even for the same person at different times.

I haven't tried weighing monthly yet. I may someday, but not soon. One of the main reasons cited for weighing less frequently is fluctuations. But I find the fluctuation bother me much less when I can see the daily weights over time. I think if I had a lot to lose, I might be more inclined to weigh less often. I think in that situation I might see a consistent downward trend monthly. But so close to goal, monthly weight would give me very little information. A single fluctuation could appear to wipe out what might have been a 3 pound loss during the month, which for me, right now, would be a huge loss . Yet, I'd be left thinking I hadn't lost anything.
  • I think the once a month thing is fantastic! With all my previous attempts at weightloss I was weighing myself after every meal and it was so so terribly destructive and I would just starve myself for a couple of days then give up! When I started again in January I threw out my scales and weighed myself every four weeks and it felt great - what an achievement to see the scale move so much without any of the torture of weight fluctations.
I dont know what happened but after the first eight weeks I found myself buying a scale in the store and promising myself I would only be a once a week user. Well I'm sure you can see where this is going...Now I am never off the stupid thing and after having one small chocolate bunny on easter sunday and seeing my weight go up by a fraction I then spent the next two days having nothing but soup and berries until the scale recitifed itself. My motivation was so much higher with my spaced out weigh ins so I would say if you can stick to it, do, as it feels great to see a big change without all the horrible obsessing every few hours! Best of luck!
  • I weigh morning and night but don't get too hung up on an individual number- I'm looking for trends.

I only take measurements once every month or sometimes only every 3 months- depends on how much weight I've lost that month.
