bread crumb replacement?

  • When something like a meatloaf recipe calls for bread crumbs, could it be replaces with something like bran cereal? Like I always have All Bran bran buds on hand, so could I grind those up instead or have any other replacement options?
  • yes! raisin bran works great-minus the raisins..((thats all the bran i had at the time))...you cant taste it or see it once you crush it up works wonders!

  • Maybe it's obvious, but I use whole wheat bread crumbs. Toast whole wheat bread very lightly (no dark marks), pull off the crusts (or not) and run 'em through the mini food processor. I do the same thing for stuffing (like in turkey) and my white-bread, white-pasta, white potato loving family has never noticed!
  • Fiber One (or any other fiber cereal) works GREAT! I use it to coat healthy chicken strips as well. Just give it a buzz in your food processor or blender and add any spices you want!

  • yes you can use all bran, remember some bran cereals have alot of sugar added to them....but All Bran is a great choice,

    I always use oats, you can also use wheat germ or bran flakes (I use a combination)
  • I just use plain old crunched up corn flakes, unsweetened of course. Less fat and quite delish.
  • My hubby (he makes the meatloaf 'round here) uses oats and it is PERFECT!
  • I either use gluten free oats (because I am celiac) or cooked rice.
  • Another vote here for oats! I've used it in turkey meatloaf as well as a vegetarian loaf that I made and it always holds together well.
  • I use oats, too. Bob's Red Mill 5 grain cereal (Rolled Oats, Wheat, Rye, Barley, Triticale, Flax Seeds) is great, too. I love Bob's Red Mill products. Wheat germ works well, also. Sometimes I use whole wheat panko breadcrumbs.
  • I use oatmeal also. I don't usually measure, I just pour some in.
