fresh olives

  • Does anyone know what the calorie count is for the fresh olive bar type olives? And what is the syrup they are in (I don't think it is olive oil, but if it feels oily on my lips?)
  • I believe the ones at whole foods are in olive oil.I will check Wednesday when I shop there because now I am curious.I cant imagine what else it is.As far as calories I dont know but would probably estimate 100 for 5 large.
  • Sorry! I don't know more about this. I like to come here to learn something.
  • It is mostly olive oil, some have other things they are in like vinegar but it's still mostly oil.
  • I think the liquid varies. Some are in oil and some are in a brine. At the olive bar where I buy mine, there are some laminated cards attached to the bar which gives calorie counts for the different types -- the calories really vary a lot, so it depends on the size and type of olive, as well as the liquid they're in and if they're stuffed. The cheese stuffed ones are higher in cals (like 40 - 50 cals per olive), while those stuffed with garlic or jalapeno are lower (I believe 10 cals per olive or so). I get the unstuffed and garlic stuffed olives and figure about 60-70 cal per ounce.

This is what my CalorieKing book says:
    1.5 oz. green olives (about 10) = 60 cals
1 oz. greek style olives (about 10) = 70 cals
  • OMG...Cerignola olives..the firm ones...MY goodness...my faves.. I could bathe in them and then inhale them..nope, no idea on calories...if you are unsure on packing fluid ask a store employee (they usually come in great big metal tubs and have nutritional info on it) or wipe them dry before consumption
  • I generally approximate.. One thing I do too when I make a big salad for family...
Which includes olives, cheese, veggies and such.. I'll use the "Juices'' that the olives are in as part of the dressing. I'll use that in place of olive oil. I find it gives the right amount of oil and a different taste to the salad. then I add vinegar, salt and other spices if wanted.. Family loves it!
But olives are awesome and are pretty good for you!

cool! not bad calorie count. I've been throwing them on salads instead of croutons, hoping they are healthier.

there is no card or sign with nutrition info at my supermarket. I was thinking it would be expensive to use all olive oil so figured maybe it's something else they soak in. Maybe I will ask next time.
