I Gotta Start Somewhere......

  • Hey all....I just wanted to say hello and am going to check out this site. Came upon it when researching the Weight Watchers At Home Plan....I have a chronic back disability (DDD) and osteoarthritis which limits my mobility. As a result I have put on alot of weight and am really unhappy about that.

I am limited in what I can do....just walking hurts. I think that if I could get rid of some of this weight it will help out so that's what I am aiming to do.

I am in the process of figuring out if the WW Momentum At Home Deluxe Starter kit is worth the investment....it is difficult for me to go out too much due to my pain and discomfort so I thought doing something at home would work out best. They offer it on ebay but I am not sure that with the savings that it will have everything I need to get started.

I was looking into keeping the cost down with the hard economic times and having one in college and trying to prepare another who will be going off in September.

I wasn't sure if the at home program allows you to do the online support and meetings or is that going to be extra??? I guess I am interested in any info that would be good to get me started.....I think that I would be most successful having a plan and an online community to get the support while keeping the cost down.

Any info or motivation would be so appreciated. Meanwhile I will see how to navigate this forum and see if I can get some of my questions answered by reading some of what others say.

Thanks and I look forward to meeting others ~ IG
  • Hi and welcome, hope you'll have a good time here.
  • Hi there IG . . . . . . I think there are a few places that will interest you around here -- we have a forum filled with those of us who have special physical challenges making weight loss more difficult -- we have forums for different age groups and forums for those with different amounts to lose. Our Weight Watchers Forums are very active and I imagine all your questions could be answered over there.

Hope to see you around regularly from now on, Chickie . . .
  • Hi IG... welcome... Hope this forum helps to encourage you, there is a lot of support here... Personally, I am more apt to stay on my program when I come in here whether it is to read or post, or play ... I've strayed away from here a few times and did not do so well, we all need support, I understand what you are going through, I too suffer from DDD C6 to L5.... it's not easy...
    Good Luck to you..
  • Wow everybody.....thanks so much for the warm welcome!! I guess looking at other intros I neglected to tell you much about myself.

I am 49 years old, have two daughters, 20 & 17 and a wonderful hubby and yellow lab. I did WW after having my girls and got to a goal weight of 149.....the first thing I will need to do is get a new scale since the one we have isn't digital. I will post a weight but last at the doctors it was around 230. So I have lots to lose here!!

OMG, Caroline, your DDD is so much more involved than mine. I have it in L4/L5 and L5/S1.....I must have it in other areas because I do have neck pain as well but my pain is mostly in my lower back, knees and feet due to the osteo. I am thinking that losing the weight will help with that.

Okay...anybody who can advise me on what Starter Kit would work out best for me I would sooo appreciate it. The last WW Plan I was on was the Points system....from reading about the Momentum on some of the threads it sounds a bit complicated. I would like some feedback on that if at all possible from you wonderful peeps.

Also....do most of you find that you can get the support here in lieu of a meeting or Weight Watcher's online???

Thanks for your patience...I don't quite know how to do all of this...perhaps I am best off posting in the WW forum where there will be more chances of people addressing my questions. I think that is what I will do and thank all of you for welcoming me aboard. I think I am going to like it here. ~ IG
  • The weight watchers here are an active and supportive group. If you need help finding anything ... just ask! We'll help you.
  • IG.. The weight loss is making a HUGE difference in the level of pain. Kinda OT but I want to quickly tell you that in my case I'm convinced that raising my Vitamin D level made a big difference in the level of pain. I am not a doctor, and I wouldn't recommend taking a lot of vit D w/o speaking with your doctors. I'm going to try to spend more time on the physical challenges thread, perhaps I'll see you there...

As far as food plans go, I don't follow a formal program. I have some dietary restrictions so I chose to start off by limiting my biggest culprits, for me it was sodium and fats.. I continued to 'refine' my plan to limit complex carbs etc.. Getting a firm handle on a couple of things made me feel accomplished. It's a work in progress. There is so much information here, I'm sure you will be able to find a suitable program and if that's not right, move on to something else... and learn along the way what works best for you. See you on the boards...
