Truth in advertising?

  • I haven't seen this posted anywhere on this site, but if I'm repeating someone else I apologize. I saw this blog post today and thought y'all would find it interesting:

    From the post:

    Quote:
[T]his bus-stop ad for a health club in the Netherlands…has a scale in the seat and displays the sitter's weight for all to see. We're sure Fitness First is expecting a huge spike in membership from this, but the effect is ruined the moment two people share the seat. That and, you know, trying to win people's business by humiliating them.
I can't imagine who thought that was a good idea! I am equal parts fascinated and horrified. The comments to the blog post are just as interesting as the concept of the public scale itself.
  • I can just see myself looking around to see if anyone's looking, sit down - check the scale and then get back up. I guess at least I'd burn more calories standing waiting for the bus than sitting (but I've got issues with my knees and lower back, so eventually I'd have to just swallow my pride and sit down).

The thing is, I'm not ashamed of what I weigh. I don't even mind telling people. If anyone would ask, I would tell them without embarassment (and have - which really surprised one guy who asked obviously trying to intimidate and humiliate me), but the idea of the choice being taken out of my hands is disturbing. Outing yourself is one thing, but making it everyone else's business doesn't sit right (pun not originally intended).
