Treadmill dizziness?

  • Ok...so I say that I hate getting on the treadmill when I go to work out, but that's not entirely true. I like that I'm able to jog and walk at a fast enough rate, for long enough, to get a good workout. But there's a problem.

You see...I'm fine as long as the treadmill is MOVING. Once it stops...even though I work my speed down over the last lap or so (from a jog to a fast walk, to moderate and to slow) before stopping, the world just spins once I stop moving. I get nauseated and dizzy and can't even walk straight. My legs and arms are shaking and weak for a good half hour afterward. I feel so badly for that first half hour I swear I'll never get on it again, but sometimes that's the only option in the little gym I go to. I've got a bike at home I'm about 98% sick of, and there's only one elliptical that's always in use, and I'm usually there on a tight schedule and can't wait for it.

Anyone else have this problem? Is there any way to stop it? Maybe some dramamine before I hop on?
  • Maybe do five extra minutes of just a SLOW SLOW pace? I mean barely a CRAWL before you get off?
  • I'll probably try that next time....online research on the subject told me anything from 1) I have an underlying health issue to 2) It just happens 'til you get used to it. Thanks, Beerab!
  • I've had that and found that I have to slow down and really wind down. In time it stopped. Best wishes.
  • Mindi, I never had that problem but I worry about you. Maybe you are going at it too hard and are not accustomed to running yet? I agree with the suggestion to really slow down, I always give myself as least full five minutes of a gradually decreasing speed/pace before I turn it off.
  • Glad to hear I'm not the only one like this! If I run outside I'm fine but I think the continuous movement of the belt is what does me in. When I finally come to a complete stop it's like my body still wants to keep moving forward and it makes me dizzy and shaky. I've found that it's worse when I don't take the extra few minutes to REALLY slow down, I mean like baby steps slow. I've been better since I started doing that. Good luck!
  • I used to have the same problem when I was going to the gym. I eventually got used to it. As others have mentioned, slowing it way down at the end of the workout helped me. But yeah, the first few times, I definitely felt a feeling of disorientation and motion sickness when I stopped and got off. It was all I could do to act normally, LOL....I really wanted to grab onto something and flop down in the middle of the gym.
  • I may be on the treadmill again today, so I'll try slowing waaaaaaaaay down at the end for a cool down before I get off. Wish me luck!!!
  • I have the same proplem but it passes by just sit down with a glass of water..im told by the gym its normal...but they also say try slow down for a few mins longer...just as beerab suggested....
