recipe tool that excludes yucky stuff, help?

  • My husband and I are fairly finicky about veggies and since restrictive diets make us want to go on a Natural Bron Killer type spree the idea is to just make better choices and do smaller portions.

Is there a recipe suggestion tool out there where you can say what foods you absolutely do NOT like and have recipes that include those excluded? I need to nuke asparagus, mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, tofu, and many many more things that my husband absolutely will not eat.

I would prefer something I don't have to pay a monthly fee for if possible as cash is currently a bit tight.
  • Have you tried www.cookingbynumbers.com? It's not quite what you're looking for but you can click on a list of things that you do have/want to include and it brings you a list of recipes. Might be a little help while you're looking for something more precise.
  • Even if a tool like this exists, trying to list everything that can't be included in a recipe, probably would be more time consuming (knowing how search engines can be bogged down searching this way, not to mention the time you would spend manually typing ingredients) than just browsing recipes and ignoring recipes that have taboo ingredients. Another suggestion is to just substitute a similar ingredient or leave out the taboo ingredient - for example, unless the mushrooms are the main ingredient (as in a mushroom soup), in most recipes they can be left out.
  • Hit the search by ingredient tab on allrecipes.com.
  • My SO has a long long list of vegetable he won't eat. If a recipe calls for something he doesn't like, I usually substitute a different vegetable or just leave out the veggie he doesn't like. Unless they are the main ingredient, veggies are pretty fungible.

For example, my SO won't eat mushrooms, so when a recipe calls for them, I usually sub green or red peppers, or sometimes fennel or celery. He also won't eat asparagus, so in those recipes I'd sub in beans or snap peas.
