Deals at health clubs - are they getting cheaper?

  • Is anyone finding DEALS at health clubs? I can’t believe one I’d gone to months ago that was like $50 per month is now $19.99 with a really low sign up fee. Perhaps this recession is going to make working out more affordable? I work out at home but it’s hard to stay motivated. And I work at home - so "cabin fever" ... I think I’ll throw on my sweats and go join!

Precisely. Three around here have already had to close due to lack of business - so many are offering amazing bargains.
  • Also, remember that all clubs can negotiate. With some clubs you can get a limited or restricted membership where you are only allowed access during the non-peak hours. You can also negotiate things like month to month, talk them out of initiation fees (which are a total joke, IMHO) and into extended sessions with trainers (beyond the first "trial" session).
  • I tried to talk them out of initial fees, the one is $99 for a month to month plan and i don't see paying it. But the guy said no, then wanted me to sign up for the 12 months which I so don't want to do. I understand it's business, I run one. but still... I don't get why they charge this initial fee, what's the purpose to lock you in?
  • I agree about the initial fee, the one I wanted to sign up for is $149 and they wanted me to pay that for me and my daughter, she is only 15.

I invested in a few pieces of equipment and I will add to each every few months. With 6 people in our family this is a better option for us.
  • I am not going to sign up at my gym again when my membership is up next month...a Planet Fitness opened up right across the street from my pricey gym and I am going to check that one out.
