Well Meaning People!

  • Hi! I've been a lurker for a few months now. I started SB January 1, and have lost 11 pounds so far. Our boss gave us a box of chocolates for Valentine's Day. So nice, but so hard to ignore. I've convinced myself to take the box home to DD and DH. So difficult when people are really trying to be nice, but it messes with your whole day!
  • Be strong! Re-gift.
  • Definately find someone to give it to...mother, neighbor, etc.
  • I feel your pain. Every Christmas my husband's Aunt send us a HUGE box of Lindt chocolates. My kids love it, I dread it. I usually have a few, then take it to my mom's house when we go for dinner. The nieces and nephews usually take care of it for us. More fun to share anyway.

By the way, I have a Madeleine too. Mine is 22YO.
  • Don't you just love that name! My Madeleine is 6, and a really healthy eater. I have no idea where she gets that from! Now I just need to get my husband on the wagon.
  • Yep, exactly. I give things away just as quick as they go in my hands, they go in someone else's. My kids shouldn't be eating garbage and me and hubby don't need to be!
  • , MadeleinesMom! Congratulations on your great weight loss so far! That was sweet that your boss thought enough of you to give you a gift for Valentine's Day, but it's a shame it had to be chocolate. If it's the good stuff, then I'd keep it to share with my family, otherwise I'd just toss it out.
  • MM on how well you're doing and on your great response to your boss' gift!

One of the things that's helped me a lot is to head things like that off at the pass by telling people about my eating habits up front as much as I can. Sometimes it's hard, but they usually get it. With your boss, you might want to say (especially if they ask later if you liked the gift), "I really appreciate the gift, but I'm unable to eat things with sugar, so I gave it to my husband and son to enjoy. They thank you!" Hopefully he'll remember for the future.

As for food gifts, I just give things away immediately so I don't get a chance to be tempted. If I get a gift at work, I'll give it to someone at another desk and ask them to either take it for themselves or put it out on their desk for others to enjoy. Or giving it to DH is always an option.

This past Christmas, a student I've worked with asked me if I eat cookies after she found out about my diet. I explained that I love them but can't have them on my plan because of the sugar. She then told me that she was making cookies to give to people for the holiday but she'd find something different for me. I explained that she didn't have to give me anything, but a week later, she showed up with a mixed CD of Christmas songs she'd made for me. I loved it and told her so. It was such a nice gift and calorie-free!
  • I got lots of candy and chocolates from my students. I gave it all away, except one. I realized that one of my students had given me a box of sugar free chocolates. I'm not sure if that was intentional or not, but I plan to enjoy one every other day or so. Not too many as I've gone that route before.
I teach first grade so I usually just take the candy, say thanks and pass it on; usually to DBF's friends.
