my mildly embarrassing moment

  • so everyone seems to be posting embarrassing stuff, so i thought i'd add my own. not many things embarrass me, but this sort of did:

a few weeks ago, i went to a sports bar with my bf to watch the ufc match with him and his friends. where i live, everyone kisses cheeks when they meet, but where i'm from in the states, we dont do that. not to strangers at least.

anyway, my biggest fear came true that night:

greet everyone, say hello, make it through the kisses, until the last guy, we both lean the same way and end up brushing lips. we both laughed as all the blood rushed to my cheeks. and then i had to sit directly adjacent to him for the night. i made some joke about "being properly introduced now".

and then my bf gave me a private lesson on cheek kissing -- the woman apparently just puts her face out there, and the man does the advancing. and 9/10 of the time, the man will kiss your left cheek first.
  • I was really stressed out about that when I went to France in hs... and it turned out that you kiss 4x for people you don't know and 2x for those you do... very strange. So my first time trying to do it right, I tried to pull away at 2 and they kept coming after me. Awkward!

Korea has a ton of this formal gestures (but not kissing). I now know how to be extra formal with everyone but I'm not so good at being casual. I bow down to my students (you're not supposed to bow down to people younger than you... but it's a habit!).
  • What a cute story. I think it will be one of your favorite "embarrassing moments" to remember...I love memories where we get to laugh at ourselves (life can be way too serious). But the real trick to surviving life is to learn to laugh at yourself in the now, not just the future. It sounds like you managed quite well. kudos!
  • how cute.
  • hahah that's funny! thanks for the tip on the girl just putting her face out! a place i hang out has a lot of spanish people and they do the same thing. i've had my share of almost-mouth-kisses and hard hits on the cheek from not knowing how to go about it... haha
  • cute story..I love it
  • Yeah, it's so awkward for us who are not used to it.
I had a guy give me a kiss for my birthday, but he seemed to be coming in for my lips. I turned my head at the last second so he hit my cheeck. Then I was worried that I had offended him, but I did not want to kiss on the lips!
