here's a stumper..

  • I made Wick Fowler's 2 alarm turkey chili the other day.

I used the packets of seasoning... paprika, chili powder, cumin, dehydrated onion and garlic and what is about one/eighth of a cup of flour. The box nutrition info listed the season calories as 60 calories x 7 servings in the box.

Okay, I'm glad I checked b/c there is no way I would have assumed so many calories in those tiny packets.

the stumper... Where did they come from??
  • wow, I'm surprised. But apparently it's in the flour. Here, take a look.

  • wow, you're right. the flour is called masa flour and it is used as a thickening agent. I don't even think it added so much to the dish. thx kelli!
  • I almost never add the masa in the chili packs. I don't mind thin chili.
  • You could use corn starch as a thickening agent.

    30 calories per tablespoon.

You could also try adding tomato paste to thicken it a bit.
  • I generally make my own chili, no packets involved. This was nice but I'd rather thicken things up with beans and corn. And cornstarch-- good one!
Funny, my husband commented, "it's thick." Not what he's used to and he didn't sound necessarily thrilled about it.
